My disastrous trip to Malbork, Poland

Posted 05-22-2013 at 10:37 AM by AlexFili

Well today ended up being a bit of a joke... I tried to get to Malbork from Gdansk Oliwa on the train but we had to pay a fine just because my student ID card was from the UK and not Poland. Why does it matter WHERE I studied? We weren't given that information at the kiosk.

Not only that but we ended up being on the wrong platform, and of course... the train just pulled away straight away, despite the fact that they should be aware that there are people who bought their ticket at Gdansk Oliwa and were trying to get on. This happened to other people as well. (At other stations the train stops for 5-15 minutes so why exactly they wanted to leave so fast I have no idea)

It just gets even crazier when we get to Malbork Castle, pay for our entry and audioguides and then we are asked for a passport to deposit so that we can get our audiobook and then give it back later. Fine, but we didn't have any of those kind of documents, again we weren't informed this at the kiosk so we missed out on valuable information about the castle. This castle only has one entrance which is clearly visible from the kiosk, it's not like we could just take the audioguides and run away.

(The castle itself was nice and I've uploaded photos for everyone to enjoy)

Finally on our train back, four drunk men barged in and caused a ruckus. They were disturbing passengers, stealing belongings and generally being anti-social. The ticket inspector tells them to get off the train but they decline. Then at the next station some station attendents in luminous jackets escort them to the platform where they...
... chat with them for a few minutes and let them back on.

Regardless of the fact that they are a danger to the public and could still cause trouble and they don't even have a valid ticket. Thankfully the drunks started 'boxing' so they were escorted off at the next station. Luckily I got home safe and sound, so all's well that ends well.

Needless to say I won't be going back to Malbork for a long time!

FAKE and gay. You were trapped in a hologram made to discourage visitors.

Don't be silly. Poles are too poor to afford making a hologram

I have no idea, is it like some sort of thing in Europe?

I don't know about over there, but in Aus a ticket inspector doesn't actually have the authority to remove someone from a train. They pretend they do, but at the end of the day only certain verified railway security officers have that power.

I googled it and found that it apply when either you study in Poland, or you study abroad and have ISIC and are a Polish citizen. Shit, tough luck. They should have told you that at kiosk... On the other hand, you could have been more precise when asking.

It's not a rule that the train has got to wait. The rule is the train leaves at the specific time shown on the schedule.

Unless you mean that people were literally trying to get through its doors when they suddenly closed it leaving half of the people in, and half out, and drove away. Then it's weird.

What's weirder is that they left people half in and half out when the doors closed. Fuckers got cut in two.

It's just the only thing I know about Poland.

My brother brought back a chess set, which was nicer.

Why is your biggest issue with the passport thing that you weren't informed that you'd need them? I would seriously be questioning the validity of any organisation that asks to hold your passport for any length of time.
