Another Musical Attempt

Posted 02-25-2013 at 11:35 PM by Oddey
Since my last blog where I posted some music I'd made, I've done what many people do and not really fully follow the advice I was given. I did try it out though and I found some of it very helpful. There are a few things I did take heed to though. This video is where I personally think it's shown off best. Again, don't mind the name, but if you have comments, I'd still like to hear them, even if I don't take your advice fully to heart.

Oh and if you can tell me what other song this sounds similar to, I'd also be happy, because I swear it is familiar.

Thanks for taking time to listen to it and read this. It really does mean quite a lot to me if you do.

My god, that flute sound is painful

Lots of interesting ideas here. The main melodic phrase seemed wrong to me. The F in the flute after the string instrument comes in was held for a fraction of a beat too long. Is that intentional? There were a few rhythmic things that didn't really work throughout the whole piece.

Also, I seem to recall your last piece was in D minor too. That's not an issue, but it's worth noting. Most of the things I write end up in lots of sharps, usually at least E major but often F# Major.

I think it was intentional, but now that you mention it, I can't really think why I decided to do that. Rhythm is something I'm awful at. I either follow it too rigidly that it doesn't become interesting, or I don't follow it well enough to make it work properly. I know what you mean, and I sort of know where you mean.

Your third paragraph is pretty much a bunch of stuff I don't really understand though. I'm not really very good with sharps or flats if that's in the area of what you're saying. This is one of the more interesting pieces that I've done in that respect, because it actually has a flat in it. And I happen to love the note D.

And sorry about the flute sounding so terrible. I thought this was the one best suited of the several sounds I could have gone for.

All synthetic flute sounds are terrible, awful, and abominations to the ears.

There's nothing else I can say other than get out there and learn some basic theory.

Fixed for being now my opinion.with a few exceptions

The main melody isn't that bad as Phylum stated but nevertheless could be better.

PS: is there at OWF anybody who creates music for REAL instruments? Like guitar, piano, triangle or whatever

OANST is an avid sensitive singer-songwriter.

Nepsotic, you should learn to play the pedantic-steel guitar.

My songs weren't all that sensitive. I just became sensitive when people were giving me advice on how to make songs I recorded a decade earlier better.

Also synth sax. Flowing analogue instruments do not work well as binary key-presses.

Argh, I hate the Flute in general. It's just such a painfully sounding instrument. It also takes me back to those awful music lessons in primary school.

I don't think you should compare the flute playing of primary school students to the flute playing of a master flautist.

...uh... I don't think so. Synthesizers are also physical in a way

He means not midi/synthesized bullshit. Stop arguing semantics like a bunch of smartass fifth graders.

Oddey, what program do you use? Finale? Sibelius? I think I asked this before and totally forgot if you answered. Either way, you should invest in some good VSTs (and by 'invest', I mean 'steal'). They really make a world of difference, and better demonstrate what you hear in your head.

I use Anvil Studio, because I'm cheap. There's this nice bit of online software I found for converting midis to MP3's with arguably better sound effects and quality. They have a variety of sounds you can choose between.

I probably should give those programs a shot, because I know Anvil Studio is not the best program to make music with. It just happens to be what I have, and since I only really do this as something of a hobby, I've never really bothered to upgrade it to something better.

personally I think good music can be created through any medium. even if you have shit programs like the ones you're using (I didn't actually listen, am in class) as long as what you're composing is melodically (melodicly?) interesting or is at least playing by the rules of music theory (which you really oughta wrap your mind around if you want to get into this stuff - the internet is an amazing resource, trust me) enough to not sound off-beat or dissonant (unless that's what you're going for, in which case whoop have fun) and at least feels like a complete piece of music.

What I'm saying is learn some theory and you can make music through any old composing program.

No. You can write good music in any good program, but Anvil Studio will not make it sound good.

I write for real instruments. I will be recording things in various stages over the next few months, so I'll probably end up posting it here for extra feedback.

Also, as far as flute sound goes this guy is pretty much the ultimate goal.

I would recommend Finale or Sibelius. Any program where you can write out midi in notation that also supports the use of VST plug-ins. I've never heard of Anvil, so I have no idea what it's capabilities are.

If he's going to be playing the music on non synthesised instruments than why would he need any VST synths?

I don't think Sekto was talking to Phylum.

And I'll see how those programs work out.
