forum skinning shit

hey i made a blog

So I’ve been rolling this around in my head for a while, and the more I think about it the more I think we should get some new forum skins made.

Now obviously that hasn’t worked out well in the past, but I think the main thing wrong with every previous attempt was: it was always one person saying “I will make this thing!” and then running out of steam after their second run through Photoshop.

I think making a new forum skin should be more than just saving a local copy of Industrial and hacking new PNGs and colors in.

What I’m proposing is to make a forum skin by starting fresh from the ground up, something that’s easier to manage and understand.

I think the best way to do this is to start by building a kind of “template” skin using HTML and CSS. We build something that’s a blank slate with a smart layout that’s easy to modify, and then we use that to build out new skins.

I can’t claim to know the ins and outs of vBulletin, but I do know from looking through their documentation that the whole thing is based around HTML and CSS. There are tons of ways to build great frameworks using pure HTML and CSS – take Foundation for example.

Best of all, by starting afresh and using simple HTML and CSS, we can make improvements – like building a skin that loads quickly and is mobile friendly.

So what I want to know is who would be interested? I know there’s a couple folks who’ve tried making skins in the past and given up, and I’m willing to bet we have a few folks around who know how to build websites. I think the key to actually getting a forum skin finished is by making it a group effort, and by having a definite start point that everyone can build up from.

Thoughts?

Nate, any idea if vBulletin skins rely on certain HTML elements? I’m guessing that since all the content comes in through PHP tags that it won’t matter, but I’ve heard crazier things.

Why would we object? If the others are anything like me, their mindset will be one of 'Wait and see'. Or, alternatively, 'I'll believe it when I see it'.
The idea has been objected to in the past. Of course, I can't remember what kind of designs were presented. They probably weren't that good.

Manco, if you want to brainstorm design ideas you can PM me or - preferably - add me on an instant messenger of some kind. I'm up to my nipples in other commissions right now, but I can help where I can.

I'm kind of late on this but if you guys need any help with graphics I'd be more than willing. I don't get burnt out very easily, and I work fast.

I wouldn’t say you were late at all, we’re not even started yet!

I’d actually like to start getting people who are interested talking together and get a plan set up, especially with those of you offering coding skills. I’ve set up a Skype group chat and have been talking with STM and Sekto; if you want to help out and get talking PM me with your Skype name.

I wouldn't mind making some designs on Photoshop or something, but I know nothing about HTML.

I also second Darkhoodness's idea. I would love to see some skins based on actual Abe's Oddysee levels

I can remember objecting to specific proposed designs. And I can remember being cynical about people proposing new themes. But I can't remember ever objecting.

I think Sekto's referring to an occasion when there was not only cynicism, but skepticism as to whether anyone would actually be implementing it too.

Just off the top of my head.

Figured as much.

I took a quick dig through vBulletin’s docs, and it kinda seems to confirm my suspicions that vBulletin themes function similarly to Wordpress themes. However, it seems especially convoluted, probably due to vBulletin 3.6.1 being ancient.

Is there at least like a default, pre-packaged theme that contains a complete set of files for building a theme out of? If we can dissect something like that it makes everyone’s lives easier.

Also, where is best to make a thread for this? Fan Corner? Doesn’t quite seem to fit.

Help & Suggestions. You're suggesting ways to improve the appearance of the forums and submitting the required media.

I suggested that first, so I should get all the credit!

I'll try and get a thread made over the weekend to get this show on the road. I'll be including a more in-depth description of what we're trying to get done, and maybe a couple simple tutorials and stuff?
