Compressed Screaming

Posted 01-10-2013 at 10:16 AM by Nepsotic
That's the noise I made when I found out I'd lost all my work on a new track, I sort of screamed, but with my mouth closed, resulting in a strange monster noise and a red face.
I was actually quite proud of this track, too. It was like old school dubstep.

But I bet none of you here will appreciate this kind of music, anyway.

Something compppletely unrelated, today when I got home, my mum asked me to go out and get some gas and electric. She didn't have any money on her so I had to use mine, which was annoying because I wanted a MIDI controller.

Anyway, in Iceland I went to find some sugar, but they didn't have any, so I walked out of the shop without anything and everybody was staring at me, it was making me feel really stressed out, and I started tearing up which was weird.
Anyway, then I went to the off-license to get an energy drink (they say you can make better synths with an energy drink, not a girly drink like water, then you'll just make shit sounds).
I bought the drink and as I was walking out the dude said something to another person, and I thought he was talking to me, so I said "Sorry?", and he was like "I was talking to him" and I died a little inside.
To make matters worse on the way home I got in the way of some girl and we did that thing where you both go to move out of the way, but you go the same way. I apologised and then that stressed out twitchy eye teary thing started to happen again.
This is why I don't like going out in public. Today was a bad day.

Downbow. I think there might be a fancy Italian word, but I skipped the theory level that you learn about that in. I think it's Grade 4 AMEB, but I don't know where it is in ABRSM exams.

In principal they're just violin sounds with a harsher attack and lots of separation, but there's really more to it than that.

And I certainly do know my stuff when it comes to flutes. That synthetic bastard needed more support.

You know what? You're right, it isn'tgood regardlessof thefact we don't like it and think it's mostly nigh-unlistenable fucking garbage. We're not saying that older music is better despite the fact that older electronic music was actually playable through consoles and mechanical instruments and not an 800$ drum machine, we're saying actual music played with real life instruments by consenting adults is more aesthetically pleasing, hasmore 'artisticvalue', is easier to converse with people about and won't make you deaf before you're sixteen years old, but hey don't listen to these guys they just have more combined musical experience than you've been alive for.

But you're a teenager full of self righteous bluster ready and willing to defend themusicyou drown out all thought with while you fondle yourself watching little girl cartoons so clearly we're just dumb phillistinesdaring to teach you thatyou can have good taste in music and retain your hearing.

I fucking hate kids these days.

I'm curious, do you use a drum machine to compose this stuff or just pick and choose things on your laptop and lay them into some program that does the work for you?

I use different drum samples to make my beats, and I make most of the synths I use. After that it's just a case of laying them down and modulation them. Although it is more complicated than that.
Here's something I did the other week:

I added a few effects to the drums in that and messed about with FM8 to make that trancy synth. The pad at the beginning I made in Massive, just like the main basses. What I hate about this one is that I think I made it a bit too glitchy.

It was nice until the 1:22 mark, then it sounds like my speakers broke. You should probably decide on an instrument you'd like to learn.

Yes. Learn an instrument. Not only is it really great in every way, it gets you out of the house and mingling with other nerdy freaks in an environment where eccentricism is expected to a degree if you have the talent to back it up. Musical activities are how I know 80% of the people I actually call friends and enjoy spending time with. The other 20% I know through people I know through music and are the kind of people that are far from out of place with musicians.

If you do instrumental stuff it's worth looking at getting theory lessons, too. You will be amazed how different music starts sounding to you. The more time you spend in different musical contexts the better your ears will get. When you hear a chord not as a chord but as the dominant is spectacular. The first time you hear a G and you just know it's a G is unforgettable. It's the difference between listening to music and hearing music.

The flip-side of course is that you can't help but naturally over-analyse music and you find yourself getting into huge stupid discussions about genres like Dubstep.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good. It's different. And I'm pretty sure I can listen to whatever I like. You sound like 70 year olds from the 80's listening to rock. "Back in My day our music was better!"
I didn't actually say that dubstep is bad. I may have implied it, but I didn't say it. I merely said that those other bands are good.

But that's all aside from the point, which is that you say that you're in to Electronic music, but you restrict yourself to one tiny subgenre. So you should either open up your range, or refine your definitions.

Why don't you get keyboard lessons? Become proficient on the piano, and you'll be able to work with instruments like the synth, so at the end of it, not only can you play an instrument and understand music, but if you're still into your dubstep stuff, you'll be able to play all the lines in and use your imagination a bit more.

Yeah, I'm going to get a MIDI keyboard, I might do music at collage, who knows.

I never once said I only listen to dubstep. I just prefer it. I listen to all sorts of electronic music.

Well ever since I started producing I've been looking at music in a completely different way. I break it down and deconstruct it in my mind.

God dammit go and do it. All their stuff is on Spotify if you have that, and if not you can probably find it on Youtube and whatnot. They’re one of my favorite artists.

The only electronic band I really like are The Prodigy. I don't need to explain who they are since they are so well known.

Anyway. I love their Big beat style that's mixed with some aspects from Punk. They have some amazing songs in my opinion.

Here are some of my personal favorites

You forgot Breathe and Break and Enter. Holy fuck the Prodigy are so sick, I just want to have their babies.

Jesus, now that I think about it, there's a part in that song that sounds like this.

Oh hey, I found a video that most of you will be interested in. It's really the last part that applies to you, where he talks about soul.

Less aggressive basses, more wobbles, repetitive, a beat structured like, well, that, and not much going on compared to modern dubstep.

The Prodigy are amazing, I recommend you listen to them. Their new stuff is really different to their old stuff, though. Their old stuff is like Jungle or something. It's all brilliant, though. Listen to the ones me and CP posted.
