Compressed Screaming

Posted 01-10-2013 at 10:16 AM by Nepsotic
That's the noise I made when I found out I'd lost all my work on a new track, I sort of screamed, but with my mouth closed, resulting in a strange monster noise and a red face.
I was actually quite proud of this track, too. It was like old school dubstep.

But I bet none of you here will appreciate this kind of music, anyway.

Something compppletely unrelated, today when I got home, my mum asked me to go out and get some gas and electric. She didn't have any money on her so I had to use mine, which was annoying because I wanted a MIDI controller.

Anyway, in Iceland I went to find some sugar, but they didn't have any, so I walked out of the shop without anything and everybody was staring at me, it was making me feel really stressed out, and I started tearing up which was weird.
Anyway, then I went to the off-license to get an energy drink (they say you can make better synths with an energy drink, not a girly drink like water, then you'll just make shit sounds).
I bought the drink and as I was walking out the dude said something to another person, and I thought he was talking to me, so I said "Sorry?", and he was like "I was talking to him" and I died a little inside.
To make matters worse on the way home I got in the way of some girl and we did that thing where you both go to move out of the way, but you go the same way. I apologised and then that stressed out twitchy eye teary thing started to happen again.
This is why I don't like going out in public. Today was a bad day.

I don't like when people talk about indie music as a genre. It isn't a genre, and, technically, the majority of what Nep listens to is indie.

Yeah, you know that instrument what comes in at 0:45, what is it? I don't know, but it sounds epic, some sort of strings? Sekto will probably know.

It's new and interesting, I told you dubstep is a vast genre.

I'm sorry. Is it a vast genre, or is it a genre where they take other genres, and put Wub Wubs in it?

It's new and interesting,
Dubbing electronic noises over a trite piece of chamber music isn't new or interesting. It isn't pushing any boundaries, and the execution is so unsubtle it's almost a parody. If it was a parody, it'd be platitudiness, since it'd be a fairly juvenile joke.

It's not my intention to bring a cloud over your interests, but it just seems like your somewhat limited listening experience which covers a fairly narrow scope of music thus far renders you susceptible to the train of thought that if it has electronic noises with triplets and slight syncopations, it's new.

Hipster music then.

Burial is the only dubstep I know that is actually worth listening. Probably due to the lack of "wubwub" breakdowns and fart recordings. It'll also super chilled. In fact, I'm not sure why people consider him dubstep.

Ughhh. Electronic music done well is fucking great. Around 1:20 when the keyboards start coming in is just amazing.

Yeah, let's not say that electronic music hasn't produced great things. It's not like Radiohead aren't one of the most culturally important bands of the last twenty years.

How the hell can anyone not hear about Radiohead? They're fucking everywhere. I can understand not hearing much of their music but I've known of their existence pretty much my whole life.

Also I've been neglecting checking out 65daysofstatic for too long, listening now it sounds pretty good even through shitty laptop speakers.

I dunno, maybe they're not that much popular in Poland. Or it's some sort of an amazing coincidence that I've never heard about them

Oh boy, an excuse to post Silver Apples.

I like Silver Apples. They're electronic music at its finest, in that they actually used a lot of electrical equipment to acquire their sound.

I like Holy Fuck because they sound like electronic music but they use real drums, keyboard and even toys like ray guns and all kinda of weird noisemakers.. No loops either, though there is some sampling.

Fine. Why don't you listen to good electronic music, like Daft Pank, Gotye or Massive Attack. Or if you really, really want music without lyrics, try Ochre.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good. It's different. And I'm pretty sure I can listen to whatever I like. You sound like 70 year olds from the 80's listening to rock. "Back in My day our music was better!"

But most dubstep literally sounds like a drugged up robot with the robotic equivalent of diarrhea.

That's just brostep actually. Besides, not all dubstep needs to focus on the bass, just a heavy sub bass is good too.

Also, nobody told me what that instrument was. The plucky stringy one.
Posted 01-12-2013 at 11:35 PM by Nepsotic

Phylum's Avatar
It's a sound imitating several violins playing each note with a downbow. It's definitely bowy rather than plucky. If you listen carefully you can really hear the richer bow sound rather than the plucked pizzacato, which would also played farther up the bridge were they real instruments.

My god, that orchestral piece was awful, by the way. Shameless use of tacky string lines to mask over the fact that it was dubstep. The orchestral portions that I bothered to listen to lacked any real substance, which I think was supposed to be filled in by the WUB sections, which were marginally more interesting. Also, that flute sound was shit. It actually resembled a flute being played with bad technique in places.

You know what? You're right, it isn't good regardless of the fact we don't like it and think it's mostly nigh-unlistenable fucking garbage. We're not saying that older music is better despite the fact that older electronic music was actually playable through consoles and mechanical instruments and not an 800$ drum machine, we're saying actual music played with real life instruments by consenting adults is more aesthetically pleasing, has more 'artistic value', is easier to converse with people about and won't make you deaf before you're sixteen years old, but hey don't listen to these guys they just have more combined musical experience than you've been alive for.

But you're a teenager full of self righteous bluster ready and willing to defend the music you drown out all thought with while you fondle yourself watching little girl cartoons so clearly we're just dumb phillistines daring to teach you that you can have good taste in music and retain your hearing.

It's like every kid these days thinks that being a contrary little smarty pants is enough to sustain their baffling and unnecessarily strong opinions on something they by and large don't need to be so opinionated about in the first place. At 14 I knew I didn't know jack about music so I just tried to absorb whatever shit I could get my hands on or risk extracting from limewire, but kids are forcefed so much garbage and told what to like so early now they can't stop and listen when people are clearly telling them exactly what they need to hear, a chorus of "NO NO NO YOU'RE WRONG'S!" heralded by a rampant disregard for any quantity of helpfulness given but instead refused and smartassedly defended against for no reason other than your trivial if not irrelevant tweenage pride. You think sticking to your guns and 'being yourself' is some magical path to being the ultimate you when it's just a lazy egocentric shortcut to acknowledging your eventual total mediocrity and abandoning whatever creative hopes you fostered in the first place, not to mention that what you have to say is so devalued by your frankenstein radio controlled Media spectacle bystanding ass that by the time you can come to the conclusion you've failed yourself creatively and exhausted all avenues of artistic ability you'll have nothing to do but find a miserable nerve wracking wage slave job and hopefully get enough money together to convince some girl to dump your rancid seed into her, so you can leave some minute vestige of yourself on the world before you kill yourself out of shame for all the time you spent arguing with people telling you to straighten up and fly right.

And that's why you need to get your parents to buy you a fucking harmonica or something.

Ahh, writing that felt really good. Mac's sleeping well tonight.
