Compressed Screaming

Posted 01-10-2013 at 10:16 AM by Nepsotic
That's the noise I made when I found out I'd lost all my work on a new track, I sort of screamed, but with my mouth closed, resulting in a strange monster noise and a red face.
I was actually quite proud of this track, too. It was like old school dubstep.

But I bet none of you here will appreciate this kind of music, anyway.

Something compppletely unrelated, today when I got home, my mum asked me to go out and get some gas and electric. She didn't have any money on her so I had to use mine, which was annoying because I wanted a MIDI controller.

Anyway, in Iceland I went to find some sugar, but they didn't have any, so I walked out of the shop without anything and everybody was staring at me, it was making me feel really stressed out, and I started tearing up which was weird.
Anyway, then I went to the off-license to get an energy drink (they say you can make better synths with an energy drink, not a girly drink like water, then you'll just make shit sounds).
I bought the drink and as I was walking out the dude said something to another person, and I thought he was talking to me, so I said "Sorry?", and he was like "I was talking to him" and I died a little inside.
To make matters worse on the way home I got in the way of some girl and we did that thing where you both go to move out of the way, but you go the same way. I apologised and then that stressed out twitchy eye teary thing started to happen again.
This is why I don't like going out in public. Today was a bad day.

Oh, I thought we were discussing dubstep. Music rules. I enjoy music.

You know who else enjoys music?

Bill Murray.

He doesn't enjoy Lorenzo Music though.

This is the problem with dubstep. It's completely locked down to it's own genre. It's not flexible, you can't hum it, you can't really write it, it doesn't transcend, so it's not memorable. I guess that's also sort of the appeal, that it's this inscrutable, ephemeral psuedo-musical entity that doesn't follow "the rules". But it's not complex or diverse, and that's why it has about as much staying power as a snowball in Tahiti.
I am sorry to say this, but you are wrong. have you ever heard of melodic dubstep?
Listen to this as an example.

Dubstep is a very very vast genre, and I know you don't believe me, but it's true, some of it is just random sounds, some of it is beautiful melody with an epic bassline, there is no reason why it can't be memorable.
Oh and if you still don't believe me, compare these two dubstep tracks, and I really recommend you do.

They're both dubstep, and they're both completely different. They're also both awesome in totally different ways.

I'm actually genuinely interested in what Chillstep is, as I can't wrap my mind around how any form of dubstep could be relaxing.

As for those other tracks, I listened to as much as I could stand. Yeah, there is some semblance of a melody there, but not really enough to be interesting or to disprove my previous points. For me, dubstep at it's best is just techno at it's worst.

At this new Pita pooper job I found I work with this middle aged lady who listens exclusively to dubstep and club music. She's miserable all the time and has repeatedly disconnected my music playing device when I'm not in the back immediately listening to it while I cut vegetables. I dare not tempt the beast with antagonism of my musical wims, but be warned young Gianno that the dark beast wriggles in the back of your mind. It speaks in low screams and purrs of 'WUB...WUB...WUB'. Blasts of aryan sound erupt in your mind and drown all thought. Your body, spasmodically jerking towards another hypnotized victim, bleeds with sweat and viscous runoff. "WUB...WUB...WUB". Your ear canals are slowly, tantlizingly suckered out by the beast and it's invasive otherwordly mandible. Feeding on all thought, from behind the silver apple comes...
The Dub Step.

It's called dubstep because it came from dub/reggae. Mixed with DnB and shit.

As for Chillstep:

That was less awful than I expected. I listened to two minutes and it just sounded like dull, pop influenced electronica that completely lacked any substance. It gave me no reason for me to listen to the other six minutes.

I think I understand that second part not in a way you intended

Jokes aside (I was joking?), when asked to listen to something other than dubstep, don't just listen to other *types* of dubstep.

This is my favorite from the album

Does this kinda count as dubstep? I love this track.

I think what electronic music does best is ambient stuff. XXYYXX probably uses a lot of electronic shit for his music and his stuff is gorgeous.

Edgard Varèse is my favourite dubstep composer.
Nepsotic, I think I've recommended before that you learn music theory, but I have nothing to add that I don't think OANST or Sekto have already mentioned.

You can't worry about petty misunderstandings and such when you're out. You'll just make yourself feel bad, and the fact of the matter is that you're the only person who gives a shit. You're perceiving negative thoughts and stares and what have you, but in all likelihood, they aren't there.

I like music to have emotion. Emotional techno music is not hard to find, but dupstep just sounds like four keyboard players having a seizure.

You know people... as cool as indie music is, it's not all that exists. I think if nep enjoys dubstep, he should be able to without people judging... It's not like choice of entertainment really tells us a lot about people.

And yes, music with more soul exists... It just doesn't change the fact that people will always enjoy crap music. Even in the face of more complex and original stuff. Some stay in that phase, others grow out of it.
I just think it's weird that you people make such a fuss about it. Nep most likely wont stop listening to dubstep. But if you stop scrutinizing his music tastes, and instead encourage him to listen to other types of music too, he might just broaden his musical horizon that way.

Also electronic music rocks! I love kraftwerk!

Also I love Dynamithix's choice of music.

I'd like to point out that I don't just listen to dubstep, I like 80's rock, metal, deathcore, lots of different genres, it isn't like I have never heard any other music and only listen to dubstep, it's just the dubstep is my favourite. You all hate it because you don't understand how to appreciate it, it's nothing like other music, and that's a good thing. You all have your own tastes and opinions and I respect them.
