Peter has 5 minutes before midnight, for the benefit of the people in different timezones. Does today mean 24 hours from when he said it?

But seriously, it's good to know Peter still reads things even if he doesn't post much.

Xav hits the nail on its head.

The following is a direct quote from a text message conversation between Peter and me on Thursday:

Peter: Do the general populace understand that Kristen and I don't even run anything anymore?
Me: The general populace has never heard of Kristen...
Peter: Awww
Me: But they know you don't run anything any more whilst still holding absolute power.
Me: You're like the Governor General!

Yay! A joke only Australians with a good knowledge of history will get!

So why hasn't anyone taken charge of keeping the forum up to date?

By which I mean why hasn't Nate learned to do it yet.

Because you need the passwords to access the server directly.

Also, the vBulletin license is in Peter's name.

What about English people with a good knowledge of colonial history?

Can't you ask him for the passwords then? I'm sure he can't mind that much?

Australia wasn't a colony in 1975.

Aye, but the Governor General is elected by the Queen and represents Australia in the Commonwealth, does she not? I would have thought it's a position embroiled in colonial history.

Eh?

:
The office of Governor-General was previously used during colonial times in Australia.
:
Early Governors-General were British and were appointed by the King on the recommendation of the Colonial Office.
:
Governors-General were expected to exercise a supervisory role over the Australian Government in the manner of a colonial Governor.
:
They had the right to "reserve" legislation passed by the Parliament of Australia: in other words, to ask the Colonial Office in London for an opinion before giving the Royal Assent.

:
Later each colony was granted its own governor and thus the title of Governor-General lapsed until the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1901.
And
:
The first Governor-General, the Earl of Hopetoun, was a previous Governor of Victoria. He was appointed in July 1900, returning to Australia shortly before the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901.
The post is embroiled in our history and our history says that we were colonies. If anything the role is more important since federation because we're not a colony any more.

Yeah, okay.

I think you're missing my point. I'm saying it's a position which is embroiled in history, yes. That is, it's involved deeply in colonial history. Just because Australia has been federated, it doesn't lessen the fact that Governor General as a position, has colonial history. You can say the same thing about Australia as a country too, and India, Canada and America.

It might be the case that I'm just not explaining myself properly and causing some sort of communication breakdown, in which case I apologise

I get what you're saying, STM, it's just not relevant. I was talking about the history of Australia as a country and the position of the Governor General as it is currently defined. That restricts the context to the time since the 1st of January 1901.

And, specifically, the 11th of November 1975.

Ah, well that clears up the misunderstanding on my part then.

To return to the topic...somewhat, did you manage to get the captcha updated? I don't even remember there being a captcha image when I joined back in '08!

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you can see that we're still 'Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.6.10'. So that's a 'no'.

Apparently Peter left his computer at the place that he's housesitting when he went to his own home to hang out with his housemates. Personally, I think that's just code for 'I got drunk'.
