Look Ma', I've made a Flash animation!

Posted 11-07-2012 at 08:27 AM by Varrok
I'll begin with being sorry for making another blog so fast...
no one cared about Hazel-Rah's blog anymore, right?

...right?

Ok, back to topic, here it is:

I'd appreciate only honest opinions. I won't be angry if you said it's shitty. Constructive criticism would also be nice, but I think I already got all the feedback I need.

Th main character looks like Jesus. It's pretty good though, you must have quite a lot of experience to pull something like this off.

Its definitely better than anything I have tried to animate. That doesn't say much though, so I instead I will say it is quite good.

Not really, that's the second thing I've ever made in Flash (the first one was extremely short and weak), and I didn't really read any tutorials

This is just personal preference but I don't like the way everything squiggles about, I don't know if that's a style people go for or not because I've seen it before but it's not my cup of tea. Other than that's it's really not bad.

That was a great piece of work, I loved how it flickered, probably unintentional but I still like it.

I just have to say, he takes the coat of the rack a bit weird and the sun rises quite quickly as he's walking, over than that it's a really good, I think you should carry on with animations like this, it was amazing and it was your second piece of work!

I think I'm not satisfied with squiggling as well. It's too time consuming and the effect is worse than I expected. If I made any new movie, it wouldn't flicker

To get the flickering effect "correct", normally people re-draw scenes 3 or 4 times rather than just twice and slow the flicker a bit. (or at least I assume that's how it's done)

Still that was damned incredible for your second flash project. Kudos to you.

The very first scene was mostly being drawn exactly 4 times, and I found that incredibly painful, (because Flash brushes almost never go the same way twice) and the later ones which were drawn 2 times didn't really differ much in my eyes so I kept it this way

Oh, and the flicker isn't slowed down - the whole movie runs at 15 FPSes

Also, thanks for compliments, everyone

Another good tactic to making the flickering (also known as boiling) is to only redraw foreground elements, and leave the background static. This has the effect of adding depth to a scene and also lets viewers know what objects to focus on.

That sounds really cool. I had problems with showing which elements should be focused on. Definitely gonna read that

good video though dude, better than anything I ever did in comm tech class flash program. could use more colour but that would probably take too much time.

Boiling. Now I have a word for what I dislike about contemporary western animation. Boiling.

Also that video was really cool and fun to watch, apart from the boiling which sort of distracted from it.

Someone didn't grow up watching Dr. Katz, the creator of Squigglevision.

When I think about this style, the first thing that comes to my mind is Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy cartoon, sorry.

Sure. And they did it well. But it's a technique that was started by Tom Snyder's animation company, and first used in television by his company's show Dr. Katz. Which, by the way, is all the same people from Home Movies, minus Brendan Small.
