And now to play us in, the sweet twang of Bo Diddley's guitar.
Hello folks,
So as the title may or may not suggest to you, there have been a few (academic/ life choice) developments over the past few weeks which I supposed were worth explaining.
Firstly, I've submitted my UCAS application form. For those of you unfamiliar with the UK university system, you pick five universities and fill in a UCAS form which is sent to each one. You then get a reply from each uni over the following few weeks. I've applied to Royal Holloway, Leicester, Chester, Reading and Kent.
Holloway and Leicester are my top two choice, I only put the other three because I had to fill in the form completely.
The opportunity to study at university very much appeals to me because it's so much more free than sixth form. I'll finally be out of my dead-beat town, away from the people I'm forced to come into contact with day in day out and in an academic environment.
The Guardian ranks Holloway at no.30 in its league table whilst Leicester reaches no.27. This is out of a list of 102.
I honestly can't wait to hear back from them, even if I get a no. The thing is, whatever the outcome is, I'll end up doing the same thing when I leave education, the only difference is I'll be doing it sooner or later and with a higher qualification. If I get into Holloway or Leicester I'll study English, hopefully to a masters level. If I do not get those two however, I'll be taking an equally exciting path.
First things first I won't be staying with my parents. I'll be getting a job and moving somewhere else in the country, I haven't decided where yet but York or London is a possibility. That is if I don't move abroad entirely. Secondly, whilst working I will write my first full length novel. I imagine this would take a number of years but I'm certain I'll do it eventually. It's then just a case of getting published and hoping for some moderate success.
I'd suggest you stay in York rather than London. York's not that cheap, but London's obviously very expensive (depending on which part, but it's all generally quite pricey). You'll be up to your neck in debt going through university, so you'll want to spend as little as possible.
It's good that you feel you want to get away from home, and I hope it goes well for you. Apart from the financial aspects, University's going to be good for you (but even with the financial stuff, you're still learning to manage, so in a way, good comes out of the bad).
@Oddjob: I already live quite close to London so I'm somewhat familiar with the expenses, I'd have to rent cheap to counter expensive food and stuff but that's not a problem because I like small apartments.
