So I published this book...

Hello folks,

Before I explain this title, allow me to present a wee back story. As detailed in my previous blog, I completed my AS levels, most notable of my exams was English, in which I achieved a solid A grade with a 96% in my coursework. That's not me trying to blow my own trumpet, it's just a fact that ties into my next point: I love writing. I do it for my job, I do it at sixth form, I do it on the weekends, I do it sitting at the kitchen table, hell sometimes I like to do it in bed.

My principle aspiration and one of the things to do before I die was and is, to get published. I want to be an author when I'm older, I'd like to do a bit of journalism and continue with my freelance writing but my overall goal is to become a famous author. Unlikely? Perhaps. But today I took my first baby step into my 'literary career'.

Over the summer I tasked myself to write a story for a friend. It was originally going to be a crappy little work maybe 5 or 10 pages in length, a quick job spanning a couple of hours. But as I worked though the night the plot developed and I realised I'd thought of something relatively unique, I hadn't taken any vast swathes of storyline from another novel as I have done in the past when I've practised writing. To be blunt I was quite proud of myself. When the book was done and I had everything finished, I gave a draft of it to my mum who's trained in editing and grammar and all that shit (as OANST knows, my grammar is lacking sometimes...commas, for instance). Once that was all done I sent the copy to one or two friends and got a pretty positive response, so I decided to go all the way and self publish the book.

I'm not trying to over play what I've done, anyone with a computer can self-publish. But I really tried to go all out here, I hired an artist for the front cover, wrote up a foreword, dedicated the book to the friend I wrote it for and got copyright stuff (which is part and parcel of writing a book). Any way, it's available on Amazon and Kobo. Unfortunately it's a little bit more expensive than I wanted it to be at £1.53. I was aiming for £1 but some stuff about royalties meant I had to boost it up a bit.

Here's the link any way, if you've got a few dollars lying around, help a guy out and purchase a copy. It's appreciated to no end.

e: Gishy and related posters are hereby banned from spanning this blog which is probably the most important one I've written in months.

I'm guessing that when you say "related posters" you mean me, but I'd just like to say well done. I'm curious, and I really want to buy this if not just to help you out, but I have no money. Maybe I'll bookmark that link and come back when I get my paper round.

But yeah, congratulations, I hope it sells well.

Wow. That's great! You should now start writing a new one, better. And then repeat.

I think you'd benefit from a more thorough product description.

I think it's good enough. After all, it's a novel, it doesn't need that long descriptions.

Aren't you able to make the look inside the cover thingy a bit longer? I mean, it doesn't even get to the actual story.

Congratulations by the way.

I couldn't think of anything longer.

I thought exactly the same thing. But unfortunately I think Amazon does it for you. Thanks as well.

The artist made it plainly clear he hated doing typography however, it suffices for a small self publishing job quite well. Thank you as well.

Supposedly there's a free Kindle app for the PC and iPhone.

If you meant this genre-wise, sorry, it's a Gothic novelette also. But then I'd like to write something different. I just need an idea and some inclination.

So I guess this makes you the first of OWF's aspiring novelists to actually finish something, huh?

No, I didn't I meant making it possible to read without that Kindle stuff. Specific genres are cool.

Kindle apps are on iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, Android and Windows Phone. And probably more.

Heh, don't get ahead of yourselves, I think I've sold one copy this far according to Amazon.

E: He did tell me to find a typographer to do the title, but I ran out of funds for one. The point is, the art he did is absolutely glorious!

You should have come to me, I can do it. And if not, I'd have got my dad to do it under the pretext of helping me to do it.

It's his job, btw.

I'll try to buy it at some point. I don't know if I have time to read it in the foreseeable future, but at that price I'd feel guilty not supporting you.

Good job.

Many thanks to you for the offer BM, if in future I require a typographer I will go to you first!

Also thanks to you, MA and Phylum. It's only a short read, most people seem to do it in an hour. =)

Simply by reading the product description, it did not entice me to want to read further. It doesn't really tell me a whole lot except the basic premise. So yes, even small novels can benefit from a thorough product description. Don't shoot suggestions down when this is STM's first publishing thing. It isn't a thing to get defensive about.
Novels usually have a whole page on the back talking about the plot with wondering questions you can only have answered by reading the story.

The thing you need STM, is plenty of feedback. Only with feedback will you actually know what to do better next time.

Now I don't know a lot about writing. But I do know a bit about marketing. And that's part of it too whether you love it or hate it.

Id buy the book ... but then again I dunno if Id actually read it. Im really busy lately. Ask me about it later

Okay, I do understand where you're coming from honestly, I was racking my brain trying to think how I could write a bigger description without coming across as overly verbose. The thing is I wanted to be careful not to give anything away and in actuality, I could probably condense the plot into a paragraph or two due to the short nature of the story. However it's something I'll look into, thanks for pointing it out. If it's stopping sales then I do need to have a look. =)

~Cheers.

STM's Avatar
Hah, I suppose so, fear not I was only joking though. I'm not an advocate of spec work because it makes the freelancer feel so vulnerable.

I remember when I had to spend at least £5.00 on a piece of literature (unless I got it from Oxfam).

Congratulations on actually finishing and publishing a product. I know a lot of people who talk about doing things, but then stagnate and end up doing abolutely fuck all. It's great that you can actually discipline yourself and focus (notwithstanding your forum skin failure of a project), and it's good that it's some encouragement that you can make a living doing something which you enjoy.
