I could never learn the cello.

Gratz on being able to start on a second musical instrument I could never get the hang of learning one.

I really should restart playing my trombone. But there’s some kind of emotional/motivational retardation going on on that front, so I have a kind of jealousy. Have a great time with the cello. Good strings are truly beautiful.

Yes, good strings. It'll be a while before I even have an iota of the basic techniques down. I forgot that you boned around, Max. I'm going to be learning the trombone this summer so I can finally give up that stupid valved atrocity I play in my school's jazz band.

Believe me, Kastere, cello requires more strength than anything. I'm still having trouble playing a single note in tune on the D and A strings (the two higher strings, both are more taut than the C and G, making it harder to press your fingers hard enough to make a concrete pitch. Also, it becomes harder to bow consistently and without going across other strings).

That’s one thing I never got about strings. People always used to ask me how I knew where my slide had to be. Obviously I knew roughly where to get the right note, and you quickly learn to feel how extended your arm is. It’s the same kind of coordination you need to catch a ball, or reach out and pick something up, or mime slapped someone in the face without actually striking them. But getting the right angle to touch only the desired strings is incomprehensibly coordinated to me, and to have to control your other hand at the same time makes it seem like magic. Not that I’ve ever tried (either bowing or magic).

I have a didgeridoo that I was getting the hand of, briefly. Now it is home to a nest of spiders and a dust factory, so I can't use it comfortably.

Lol, my friend has a didgeridoo that I would blow on sometimes (shut up, you pervert). Pretty fun once you get the hang of it.

Strings are pretty weird. It's kind of like rubbing your belly while patting your head at the same time, and almost literally in the case of basses and cellos, but as the age old cliche goes, practice makes perfect.
