30 Minutes or Less

Many years ago my bike bit the dust, and I never got round to getting a new one, since I still had a good amount of money left from my holiday I've been looking at bikes all week.

Today I went to Halfords, now for those who don't know, Halfords is a chain of stores in the UK (maybe worldwide I'm not sure) that sell car accessories bikes and outdoor kit such as tents ETC.

So after looking around I picked out a bike, they offer a service where they will build the bike for you in store free of charge, I asked them to do this and they said it would be ready in 30 minutes.

So I had other things to do, whilst out, there was an upside-down bungie set up, it was advertising the Windows Mobile platform using a Nokia Lumia 800, the challenge being that if your smartphone could take a photo, upload it to facebook and tag yourself in it quicker than a Lumia 800, you win £20, if you lose, the chance to go on this upside down bungie.

It was a disaster, firstly, I couldn't connect to the WI-FI they had set up to keep things even, then the second time I wasn't logged into my Facebook app, the criteria being that the phones had to be logged into Facebook already. But a third run with everything going fine, I lost, the Lumia 800 had a button for the camera, where as I had to scroll across my home screen and press camera! Argh, my phone must suck if it doesn't have a button on it for the camera!

I declined the offer to go on the bungie, no way in hell was I doing that, but I had a good time laughing at a poor girl who did go on it.

So I was out for about an hour when I went back to Halfords to find that they hadn't even taken my bike out of the box...

Yeah, great 30 minutes guys if the damn thing is still in the box. Instead, they said instead of me having to wait around for them to build it they had the exact same bike which they built last night on display, all I would have to do was wait for them to fit the extras I bought which were some lights and mudguards.

So I was a bit nervous riding a bike for the first time after all these years, and I was rather wobbly at first, but, I'm happy I can still ride a bike, oh how embarrassing would be it riding a biek with a 20" frame with stabilizers

It would be more embarrassing riding a car with stabilizers but you have no trouble there. Hope the bikes good!

The bike I have seems to have mixed reviews on the internet, but in all honestly, I don't plan to do any proper sports with it, just use it for pleasure and for travel. Only problem I've found is the gears, for some bizarre reason, it won't go from 6TH to 5TH, I have to from 6TH to 4TH then 5TH, oh, and grip shift, fucking useless in the rain when you actually need to change gear!

And the disc brakes have no ABS either, BOOOOO!

I can imagine you riding a really small bike with stabilizers whilst dressed how you were in that recent photo in WDYLL.

hehehe. Oh wow that's funny.

Take it back to Halfords and get them to tune it up for you - New bikes shouldn't do that crap. My first" proper" mountain bike was cheap and did that while the chain also kept slipping randomly all over the damned place - The shop replaced the entire back gear cassette with a better one for free, since the stock one was completely shit.

In fact I had to replace that unbranded piece of shit mountain bike with a decent (£300) Raleigh hybrid after only 3 years of use since the parts on it were poor quality - And that was even after replacing half the parts with spares from a different, better quality bike with a bent frame that I found dumped in a field somewhere. The hybrid's already lasted me nearly a year and nothing has broken or gone wrong on it so far.

So don't buy poor quality bikes, you'll regret it like I did.

I'm drunk. Yay.

I have an Apollo Outrider and I've had a good history with Apollo bikes, this is my 3rd one, there was actually nothing wrong with the other two, the only reason they got replaced is because I outgrew them.

That happens when the derailleurs are due for adjustment. If you don't know how to do that, take it back to the store. It should only take a minute or two to fix.

There's a well known saying for exactly this situation.
