I agree that girls don't really seem to have any good role models in popculture nowadays, but then again I'm a man and don't care.

Might I just add something on a serious note, so long as the term for all the people on Earth is 'mankind', women are not on an equal footing with men. It's not something that should be fought for, it's something that men should gladly give. Equality is a great gift.

Actually I rescind my assessment of no role models. Tina Fey and Lena Dunham, anyone? Both are self-made women with successful careers writing and acting. Fey is probably one of the funniest writers on TV/film. I am inclined to point out that the person who did this comic makes some valid points but I'm more inclined to notice that it's drowned in her poor portrayal of the facts.

I see a lot of issues discussed by various people and in various ways including this one. But this is the only issue in which someone can say something that should not be controversial and cause this much of a fracas. Which is part and parcel of the very issue being brought up. The controversy is the problem.

I typed out about four comments here, basically synopses of why the liberated male/female groups and militant subgroups therof just can't get along... but when I realised I couldn't back any of them up, followed by the disappointing bubble-burst when I remembered (and I do forget) that I'm a teenager and not allowed credible opinions on grown-up issues, I decided not to bother.

I will, however, state this half-baked observation I made the other day:

The principle drive of counter-"rape culture"-culture is the idea that "Women should not be taught to avoid being raped, Men should be taught not to be rapists".

Okay, fair enough. Human rights, unequivocal thumbs up there.

But surely, if there was ever going to be a group of men that was totally ignorant, dimissive or downright opposed to the teaching of civil rights and the unfair treatment of women in society, it would be potential rapists, men who may at some point decide that their need for power over another person supercedes that woman's ability to give consent.

In other words, their campaign against rape culture will be heard and understood by pretty much everyone except rapists.

Here's my opinion as a woman.

Men and Women are obviously two different genders with different attributes but their level of intelligence is the same.

Jobs these days don't really require heavy manual labor and manly stuff thanks to technology, so Men and Women can both do these jobs and should be paid the same, of course taking into account parental leave, different support options, etc

Regardless of if you're a guy or a girl, being raped is awful.

To Manco: I am well aware that women are not only raped when they are out on the street, and that the majority of raped women know their rapist. My comment was directed at the comic's assertion that she's afraid to go jogging after 6 p.m. because she thinks she's going to get raped. My answer to that is quit being such a narcissist.

Edit for BM: I agree that there is a lot of stupid shit said to feminists, or really any woman concerned with the issue, about their fears. But part of the issue is the stupid shit that they say too. Again, it's a real problem. The problem exists. But the narrative here proves why people can't discuss it rationally. The one side is outright lying, and using clearly manipulative emotional bullshit to prove their point. That helps no one, but instead makes the problem worse.

I don't understand why people are so vehemently opposed to any of this and are under the assumption equality amongst sex/gender is already a thing. As long as birth certificates/ids/legal paperwork in general require you put down things like sex and ethnicity (things that can make certain people incredibly uncomfortable to fill out) there's not equality.

Currently on nearly all legal paper work you're required to mark ONLY either male or female for your sex/gender. If you haven't noticed, gender identity is becoming a pretty.. "serious" thing.

And as far as ethnicity goes? Why is that even a relevant thing anymore? Why do we even care what race someone is. In my case it makes me uncomfortable because I'm sick of being called a liar and having people walk up to me attempting to speak in spanish because they assume I'm mexican, when all my documents and blood tests clearly state I'm caucasian. I have another friend who's so mixed people assume their race as well, her mom told her to mark caucasian when filling out these papers because her father is white, but her mom is black. Her mom doesn't want people to discriminate on her daughter based solely off what a shitty piece of paper says.

As for the latter, I don't see what that has to do with equality at all. Ethnicity is a statement of fact, any racial baggage attatched to that isn't the fault of the documentation in the slightest.
