Trying to make a Doom skin.

Posted 05-30-2012 at 08:18 AM by Spooce-aholic
I would like to make my own custom skin for Doom. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with drawing.

Can someone teach me how to draw or something? If not then can someone make the skin for me? Thanks.

As in classic Doom?
Also, if you can't draw, why exactly do you endeavor to do something like this?

I would like to do something, failing that someone tells me how to do it, could someone do it for me please?

I can't draw to save my life, although I do have a high attention to detail and know what looks good and what doesn't - So I'm making a Minecraft texture pack anyway. And I've learned a hell of a lot in such a short space of time.

So just do it and keep re-working your stuff and learning until you think it looks good enough. Doesn't matter about your current skill level. Start by replicating stuff, but don't try and claim it as being your own or so.

I assume you would be skinning the environment only, as the characters in classic Doom are just flat sprites.

Sekto, you are partially right. However, there have been ports of Doom like Skulltag and GZDoom which allow you two modify what your character is, even using 3D models works now.

I should really find my old skin for it, I was a doomguy but with a libretto in his utility belt thing. :P

That's all well and good, but it stands that he needs to be far clearer about what he's doing here and what he wants from us.

I can tell you from experience that I know for sure that Skulltag has a skins directory inside it.

The way skins usually work in .wads like Brutal DOOM is that you have to define a MAPINFO or GAMEINFO lump inside of a wad file that you use to run the game with.

Basically, you follow all the doomguy sprites. 5 directions for each frame of animation on it imported to the wad file. Next you have to point out to the game that you've created this new load of skins. I know that for Skulltag at least, there is a wiki on doing this:

http://zdoom.org/wiki/SKININFO

FYI: You can use a simular type of definition and sprites to make weapons and monsters like this video:

I think someone already made Oddworld Doom. It had Slogs and everything.

I have made two Dawn of War skins and had them hosted at a popular community site. But I won't help you because I'm an arsehole, and a busy one at that.

I tried searching YouTube for tutorials, none of them were what I wanted. Since I'm making this for a game on my computer, I will have to use Gimp instead of pencil and paper.

At first, I wanted to make it in Blender. I would render the model at different angles and use the images as the skin.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find tutorials for making a person in Blender either.

Who's username are you talking about Wil?

You know that was a joke right? Novaman was a member doing the exact same thing but thought giving them his 'thanks' was worthwhile.
