Spot the flaw in this argument

Posted 05-03-2012 at 05:33 AM by Nate

Also, spot the moment where the other guy tries to hide how funny he found the unintentional innuendo.

I remember seeing this a while ago, but the version I saw was actually longer and he starts talking about the banana with it in his mouth. Sadly I can't seem to find it no more, but still, the video is hilarious, and it's only now I noticed the other guy laughing because I was too busy watching the guy talking.

The main flaw I noticed was that’s not the best way to open a banana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCv4c7dFzVw

I always open bananas the way Manco showed, most probably because I'm an atheist

I'm actually surprised you're only posting this video now. It's been the subject of mass ridicule on the internet for years.

Also, Nate, you need to watch Thunderf00t's debate with this guy.

I've been trying to find one. I know there's one out there, but Google isn't being very helpful.

Pfft, that's ridiculous.

It's evolution, right? Humans evolved from bananas.

Penis jokes aside, (yeah I know, I'm not fun) I must confess that I didn't know about opening a banana from the bottom until a couple of years ago. I always opened it from the top, using my nails to tear the skin if it was a bit tough - It always worked for me and I never thought about it otherwise. Occasionally the top would get a bit bruised. But opening it from the bottom makes much more sense.

It's actually odd how most people open their bananas from the top. Why is that?

I like his point.

I wouldn't use a banana.

You were being serious?

It's an old debate. The following is obvious, but why do I get the feeling I'm missing a point entirely?

Whatever, I'll post it anyway.

He doesn't know how evolution works. Banana seeds were spread primarily by primates eating it and shitting out the seeds everywhere - That's how fruit "works".

The banana plants that produced fruit which had a better appeal to primates got eaten and their seeds distributed, and the plants that produced unattractive fruit didn't get distributed.

Over millennia and countless generations, banana plants evolved more and more to be increasingly attractive to primates, hence they have many features that make them so. And we're part of the primate order.

So bananas are not proof of a god existing who designed everything.

The argument is so stupid that it's not even worth pointing out whats wrong with it.

Which end of the banana are we calling the top here? I always open them from the bottom - that is, the end with the stalk.

Did you then stroke it before you ate it?

You know, I thought they grew the opposite way around, yet people always display them with the stems at the top, 'cause it's easier to store that way. I was referring to the top as being the stem.

There we go, that shows my ignorance.

DarkHoodness, that's a good point, but not the one I was aiming for.

Bananas as we know them are a cultivated fruit. Wild bananas are almost inedible and contain huge seeds. Thousands of years ago, humans bred them to be that shape, colour and texture.

What's more, if humans were to suddenly disappear off the planet, banana trees would die out very quickly. They've been bred so that seeds appear only very rarely. I read that the Global Seed Vault really struggled with the banana; they had to mulch and sieve several tonnes of fruit to find one or two seeds. Modern cultivation occurs by cuttings.

That's an extremely valid point, but I wouldn't guess that. Now it looks even more ironic to see him talking about that 'ideal God's creation'

Oh right, so we're responsible for their evolution as we know them today. I should've known that as well. Gah.

Oh well, now I do. And yeah agreed with Varrok, it makes his argument incredibly ironic.

He's probably referring to the fact that they are soft to chew through, but yeah, he is wrong, they are not chewy.
