Driving Me Round The Bend

Posted 04-05-2012 at 02:52 PM by STM
No fear, this isn't a whiny blog by any means. =D

I was just browsing through the internet and trying to get as many different opinions from friends as possible, so your input is much appreciated. Basically, I am thinking of learning to drive, not to get a car afterwards, but from the job application aspect of things, it always looks good if an employee can drive. Any way, as you may or may not imagine, being British, unemployed, etcetera, I don't have masses of money to spend, so I'd like to get it all done for as little money as is possible, the cheap skate that I am.

Is there anyone who knows how to drive, or is looking to drive, that might be able to suggest some ways I could save a few quid on the learning side of things? Thanks very much. =)

Get your parents to pay for your driving lessons, that was the way I did it.

Driving lessons round here cost anywhere from 80-100 bones per lesson. Not cheap. If you're going to go that route, make sure you're going with a good school. My instructor was kind of a useless creep.

That really pisses me off. If only everyone's parents had the money to do that for their kids.

What Jordan said

A better alternative would be to ask your dad if he can teach you some ropes on a weekend or something.

Read up on the highway code, then cycle on the roads for a couple of months with traffic. It's dangerous as hell and I loathe having to do it, but damn, it'll do wonders to your road sense...

You'll quickly learn to read what other drivers are doing, what you should be looking out for, the position of other drivers near you and where they're going, and how to judge gaps in traffic, which is perhaps the most important part of driving. Especially as your life depends on it.

It's not the same as driving a car, and of course you move a lot slower, giving you a lot more time to think, but it is a good way to start. I actually wish I knew what I know now about reading the road when I attempted and failed my driving test back in 2007. I haven't gotten around to trying again yet.

But the more experienced you are, the fewer lessons you'll have to take. Also there are vids like this online (filmed by my last driving instructor, I took a couple of lessons with him, he's really good at his job) which are boring as hell but it's worth studying them. They can help you prepare for learning the basics.

Do any of your pals drive? I learned by walking to a big cemetery a few times a week and meeting a friend who had his own car, it's basically just a lot of practice.

I'm learning to drive after college for the same reason. Lucky my Grandma who only lives across the road said she'll pay for it all. Fine by me.

Ahaa, I wish we had the money to afford that JG, but job security isn't so great around here. Cheers for the help the rest of you, I might apply for my provisional and then ask me 'rents to let me drive around some empty roads in the car.

But Jenny, is there any question that you won't answer with "Get your parents to pay for it. That's what I did"?

That's clearly a challenge, aimed at every member except JG.

I accept. Um... Cars, photography, video games, looks like a girl, gay... Okay, got one.

"How can I afford to hire thirty-six rent-boys?"

Steal a car. Try your best until you wreck it. Then steal another.

Trial and error. That's the American way.
