I changed my life today.

Posted 01-28-2012 at 04:53 PM by STM
So, today at dinner, I renounced Catholicism and Christianity, preferring that instead I am called an agnostic from now on. I'm a little scared.

I just thought some people like WoF and BM might be interested. This doesn't mean I've stopped believing in God, it just means, well, I'm not too sure any more. There are too many inconsistencies for me to be certain now.

This is a pretty big step for me. I feel a little alone I guess.

I can understand the feeling of losing something you always believed was there. Change is a difficult thing to come to terms with, especially when the change is coming from your way of thinking. The fact that you've been pulling at the preconceived ideas of religion is admirable, as is the fact that you've allowed yourself to reach the conclusion you have.

I guarantee that as you become more comfortable with the idea that sense of loss you're feeling will change into a sense of empowerment. You've not lost a safety net, you've gained a new way of thinking that will serve to bolster your sense of self.

It's not very often someone will change their mind about something they've believed for a long time, be it based in religion or anything else. I can't help but respect a person who, when faced with undeniable facts, actually readdresses their world view instead of shutting down their mind.

You have accomplished an impressive victory over instinctual human nature, one which I certainly didn't have to fight, and I'm sure a lot of people here didn't either.

It may seem hollow and somewhat patronising, and if anything I've written does give off that impression I hope you will believe me when I say that's not my intention. That said, congratulations.

I understand that atheists find it hard to understand and sympathise so it's okay, I know what you mean, and you too Moxco, I just got a little pissy, you know how I do after all. =)

I do also appreciate your guys kind words and interest, especially that no one has been a dick when, I know what I was like a few years ago about the same topic, I couldn't conceive this would have happened back then! It's certainly an interesting prospect. I have to carry myself now entirely.

It's a big, free, astonishing, unrestricted world out there, and the only life you've got to worry about is this one.

Go get 'em, tiger.

I couldn't give a fuck if you believe in God or not, but I think it's great that you're thinking independently. I have met a lot of Christians and a lot of atheists, and the majority of both groups were dumb fuckers with no individual minds.
