Random shut downs

Hey folks,
So for the last few days, I've been having a lot of trouble with my laptop. It's a 3 years old MSI M model or something...any way all of a sudden it's started randomly turning itself off if I hold it funny, like, it'll work fine for an hour maybe and then if I pick it up and shift it a few centimetres it turns off suddenly, but then other times I can shake it vigorously and it'll run fine...

I /think/ I've narrowed down the problem to my hard drive (I know it's not a clogged fan or the battery for certain). Because after a little trial and error, I realised that sometimes when I press my laptop were the hard drive is housed (under the case) it turns off. Is it possible that a faulty hard drive is capable of turning off my whole laptop?

I think the name of the drive is 'Scorpio Blue' if that helps. It's just that I'd like to know if its an easily solvable problem before I go and get ripped off by the computer fix shop or buy a new drive.

I remember that I had a problem where my pc kept shutting itself off, turns out the power supply going into the computer was faulty, so I suggest making sure your battery is ok. From what your saying, sounds like it's connection is very temperamental.

As I said though, it can't be the battery because this happens when my laptop is plugged in to the mains (I never leave my battery on by itself any more because of how depleted it is.)

I know my shitty old laptop used to shut down on its own after using it for a while. I kept it on my bed or lap, which would cover up the heat vents and cause it to overheat.

Also try taking the battery out and just running it off the mains.

I've done that, and it still shuts down...it's not the power supply and it's not the fans. I mean I know for certain, emboldened that on the blog too.

Hmm... Nothing that I can think of, but try to see if Windows can identify the problem.

>Go start, run, %windir%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s

>On the right side panel, click Create Custom View

>Another window will open. Now check all the event levels except information and warning.

>Underneath those checkboxes, select By Log and in the drop-down list, expand Windows Logs and check System.

>Now click OK and OK again.

It will now run a scan of all the crashes and errors etc you've had on that laptop. Make sure you've had your laptop shutdown on you more recent than any other error and the event will be listed as the most recent, at the top of the list.
It will be listed with an event ID as well. Either Google the event ID or post it here for further analyzation.

It sounds to me that it's more likely to be the wiring to the hard drive, rather than the hard drive itself. Actual hard drive issues tend to be permanent, rather than intermittent. And, yes, a faulty connection can cause the computer to crash and that might then cause it to shut down.


I assume the hard drive is in a bay with a removable cover. Unscrew it, take it out, blow air in to all the pins and sockets, then put it back in. That's about as much advice as I can give.

Ugh crashed again a few times today. Looks like either I'm going to have to pay to get it fixed after all. Either that or I put up with it until March and then buy a new laptop for my birthday. Do you think it's a waste of money to buy a laptop when I've only had this one for three years? It's not that outdated.

I'm reasonably sure the lifespan of a laptop is only supposed to be around two years.
