When you play games like Fallout / Skyrim / Mass Effect, are you good or evil?

Posted 12-16-2011 at 06:32 AM by AlexFili
I'm doing a survey about the morality choices within games like Skyrim, Fallout and Mass Effect. If you could fill in a quick survey for my university report I'd be really grateful!

Haven't played Skyrim yet, but concerning Fallout 3 I tend to be lawfully good, in a way. Maybe more along the lines of neutral; I do what's best for myself, while sticking to my strong sense of morality.

In any game with good and evil I always play good first. Like in C&C I'd always play GDI before Nod.

In games like Fallout where morality comes in to play I do the same as Mr. Bungle. My own agenda comes first, but not at the cost of others. If they decide to deliberately get in my way though, they die.

Good but I break the rules only to save the world. Even if it means blowing up megaton! hehehehe

lol, I didn't blow up Megaton on my most recent playthrough. instead, I decided to give those cunts what they deserved by unleashing a horde of feral ghouls upon their prejudiced asses. Dicks.

@Havoc, I would agree with you there. I'm generally Lawfully Good, but if I can get away with a small offense I will. I prefer seeing no blood spilt generally, but I'm not afraid from dishing out justice if it needs to be done. I protect my companions as much as possible, but accidents do happen. I usually have summon mods so that I can have a disposable army of about a hundred Talon snipers (not at once). I've also got a Lucy West companion with power armour (essential on so she can't die).

I'd say the only reason my karma is so low in Fallout 3 is because I'm constantly stealing shit. I mean, it's not like anyone else is gonna use those lunch boxes.

I usually play as a good guy, neutral-good but if I'm using /tgm then I pretty much indiscriminately kill everyone soo...

When I was younger, I'd always go down the evil path. I'd randomly throw around villagers in Black and White, ruthelssly massacre civilians in Fable, and cause random earthquakes and volcanoes in SimCity (if that counts).

The only game I wasn't a total bastard in was KOTOR, and that's because of that damn Hammerhead near the beginning of the game, the one who was getting bullied by little kids. Poor sap just made me feel terrible.

Whenever I get a game where the choices affect the game, I always have to be good. I don't know what it is but I always want to be the good guy who helps everyone, even assholes. But on my second or third playthrough of games of that type, I tend to be the extreme asshole and just fuck everything up on purpose.

- Me too. To be fair the villagers in that game were totally asking for it. "Ooooooooh, we're not keen on sinking..." Didn't help that the fleshies were just so darned vulnerable in that game. Same as in Spore in space stage when you pick up a creature. Beam it down nicely? Nuh uh. They just fall like a ton of bricks.

Funny thing about Karma is that you can just give pure water to a few hobos or donate money to the church and go all the way back to neutral/good karma in a flash. How strange that money can atone for player sins.

I played bad once in Fable, and I have unfinished games in Fable 2 and 3 as evil gits. But I just enjoy it less. You become monsters rather than charismatic supervillains, and the fantastic escapism that videogames provide do not cater to me when playing a monster. I expect City of Villains would do the trick, but I never played that.

I like playing good. I don't feel guilty. I feel like a big goddamn hero.

Like I said in the Skyrim thread, conventional moral choices in games are bullshit. It's primary school morality.

Oh, after my initial playtrough I generally play again as the extremely badass character. You say the wrong thing you die. You block my path you die. Got an itch on my side you die. I steal your shit and you die. I buy your shit and you die so I can get my money back. Basically... everyone dies.

@Mr. Bungle Feral ghouls do make less mess then a Nuke does. And it gives the ghouls a nice home! Good thinking.

Good at first to make friends, bad to get bonuses, good again usually to shift the ending in my favour.

Of those games, I've only played Fallout 3, but definitely good, always—same with Fallout 2. They practically worshipped me in places. I'm a karma whore.

In RPGs like Fallout, I’ll normally start out trying to be good and just end up getting sucked down the evil path thanks to some sidequest offering a nice bounty.

Megaton? Fuck those dudes, I need a penthouse.

In more linear games like Bioshock/Persona, I’ll stick to the good path, at least for the first playthrough.

I don't think you can truly be evil Dragonage. Same with Mass Effect.

Then how can you say you cannot be 'evil'?

I torched a city full of innocents in a Dragon Age DLC.

I also killed a noble alien chick to get her more powerful but psychopathic daughter in Mass Effect.

Those seem pretty evil choices to me.

I think his point is that it all boils down to you saving the day in the end.

In said DLC, saving my military base was more important than saving a city full of people who couldn't fight off a cold.

The epilogue stated the rest of the country was not amused.

In my opinion, I saved the day.

My day.

What Glitch said.

I never played the DLC for Dragonage, I can't comment to much on that specific part.

But all in all, i'm guessing you saved the millitary base to save the world from the darkspawn right?
Sure in dragonage you can make some questionable choices, but most of them depend on your views. Like the choosing if you want to side with the Templars and wipe out the mages tower.
I mean sure you killed some innocent mages, but like the Templars said, even one blood mage is very dangerous. Sacrifice the few to save the many. A questionable choice yes, but i wouldn't call those evil intentions.

As for killing the justicar in ME2. Yea that is pretty bad, i can't think of how you would justify that. But like i said before, you are still the hero at the end of the day. You still save every one from the Collectors.
