The Cherry is Popped
Posted 11-09-2011 at 06:00 PM by Ridg3
My (professional) concert cherry of course.
I was moaning a while back that I haven't been to see any bands live and I really need to go out and actually see something, I mentioned as well that the bands I want to see before anything else were Cradle of Filth, Anathema, Alter Bridge or Devin Townsend Project. So you could imagine that a few short days of mentioning this here I happen to come across a Fartbook message saying that DTP is playing in Belfast. I was elated. First chance I got I went straight into the town to grab two tickets. One for me and my girlfriend (who doesn't even like metal.) My mates were meant to be going, about six of us in total I believe, but at the end it turned out that only the two of us went. It was a bit sad but wasn't going to ruin my night. So we went to Belfast, which finally redeemed itself with this concert after the EMA's, checked into the hotel and carted off to the venue two hours beforehand. Sat in the next door bar for about an hour then waited outside the venue for the rest and sparked a couple of doobies. I wouldn't get drunk but it's one of those experiences that gets better when your stoned. Got in and straight away I bought a Ziltoid t-shirt and handpuppet for £30. Which I thought was pretty cheap. Got to the stage and we were right there, right there able to catch the sweat off the bands. Looked up on stage and seen the drumkit from the Turisas band. By fuck that thing was HUUUGGEEE. Well, that meant that it was Turisas playing first. Fair enough I thought. I like Turisas, they're cool and they're an appropriate warm up for Devin Townsend if I do say so. The violinist of Turisas fucking kicked ass and the singer and Keyboardist were rank fucks who drank Buckfast on stage (Dixanadu will get this.) But none the less I enjoyed them. Now it's time, for the main man, my idol, inspiration, deity and mancrush. Fucking Ziltoid made an appearance, much to my delight. Sexy bastard. When Devin came on, I was almost starstruck then I was snapped quickly back to my senses whenever they band broke into Truth and Seventh Wave. Good job Turisas was a warm up act for me because I was fucking bouncing all over the place, man. My bladder was fucking full to the brim with the amount of free bottled water we were getting handed as well, not great considering we were walled into the crowd with no chance of escape. After that he spoke to the crowd about something or other before pointing at me a called me a nerd. I was pleased. Setlist he played; Bold are the ones I wanted to hear. Truth Seventh Wave Deadhead ZTO By Your Command SuperCrush Juular Stand Bad Devil Good setlist if you ask me. Because of the rambunctious crowd at this stage I had to stand with my gf between me and the barriers to limit as much shoving on her as possible, which left her, of course, with shit catching responsibilities. During the show he casually leaned against the pole, which he hates, playing Deadhead (my all time favorite Devy song,) put a G-string on his head, danced stupidly and stepped onto the barriers from the stage to play Truth. Shockingly funny man and a very nice guy as well. After the set, unlike Turisas, he came down from stage to thank everyone by shaking our hands and taking pictures before heading outside to have a little meet and greet session outside the venue. Sexy metal bastard. I was going to stay behind to meet him but there were roughly a hundred people outside and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't want to see a shitload of people after playing a gig (not to mention my bladder was fit to burst) so I carted off to the hotel. The ringing in my ears was unbelievable. So yeah, this blog may not mean much to you but it's certainly a milestone for me and I'm glad that Devin was part of my first proper metal concert experience. |
