Just a quick technical question.

I've googled this but can't find an answer, is it dangerous to delete your first ever computer back up, only it's about 500 gb whereas everything else is only about 20 gb...seems like deleting it mike take a whack out of my memory or something...only problem is I keep running out of memory all that time and it's a pain to select which other months I want to delete instead.

I don't think it is.

Otherwise, you'll be waiting quite a while for that shit to delete.

Unless your first backup doesn't contain the only copy of any files or settings you want to keep, why would it matter? Surely your latest backup is the only one you need.

I assume you mean you are running out of hard drive space. I first thought you meant would deleting that use up all your ram.

It should be find. If you don't need it delete it.

Okay, thanks, this is good because it's such a massive amount of space that's being taken.

Except if all the other backups are so much smaller, it implies that they're only progressive backups. That would imply that you need the oldest backup in order to do any restore. So don't delete it.

The other option is to delete all backups and do a fresh one from scratch. You'll end up with one large backup again, but it will only have the files you currently need and none that you might want deleted.

714mb

A massive amount of space...

I download that much every couple of days.

Yes but you don't have that backed up every couple of days.

I deleted it yesterday Nate, no problems so far, so I think I'm golden.

Why would you back up your computer every couple of days?

Backing up every week is near superfluous as it is.

Well there you go then. You just answered your own previous statement.

Have you tried to restore it yet? I never said that deleting the first backup would cause an error for further backups, just that you'll be screwed if your file system dies and you want to access your backup.

I have more recent backups, most of the stuff from last year I don't need so it had to be DESTROYED.

But are they full backups or incremental backups? If they're 20GB whilst the original was 500, then it sounds like they're only incremental. In which case, as I've said several times already, you won't be able to restore anything.

I meant MB, 500 MB's ish, the others are 20, and I don't really know, but it's too late now to do anything about it. Que sera sera.

The point still holds. If all you have are the smaller backups, then you will not be able to restore. Full stop. Impossible.

Read my lips: If you want a valid backup to be stored, you need to delete everything, reset the program and backup from scratch.

Hmm, I'm not too sure what you're trying to say here....

No I joke, thanks, I'll do it when I have some spare time.

First I'd check to see if the software he's using can force an initial backup.

True. That's what I meant by 'reset the program'. I was trying to be as unambiguous as possible without using too many 'if's or 'maybe's.
