Unconstitutional Internet; a sequel of sorts to my "Youtube" blog

Posted 07-30-2011 at 08:56 AM by Sekto Springs
Bill has been passed that will effectively monitor every fucking thing you do on the interweb.

So yeah. Basically they're bugging your internet. No more trawling safely for CP like the good ol' days.

The internet is becoming an Orwellian nightmare.

If there's one thing the internet is good at, it's repelling authority. People will always find a way to get by, even if they have to speak in code for the rest of their lives.

Good luck America, monitoring your citizens

Pfft, do you realise how much data such a thing would use? I think that bill asks the impossible - And they'll realise this when they try and implement something like that. It's totally unfeasible.

Let's not go crazy; it was passed by a committee, not by Congress. Its not law.

Also, I don't see how this is different to telcos keeping your phone records or banks keeping your transactions. All of the above are available to law enforcement officials holding an appropriate warrant.

Because there's no such thing as bank porn...

I agree with Havoc, no longer is the internet a free country, more like a dystopian dictatorship.

Then again it doesn't affect me...yet.

This is precisely why people get upset about internet privacy, despite the fact that bank and telephone records say much more about us than if someone knew of our jello fetish.

Cant someone just make a new internet separate of the current internet? I know it would take massive amounts of resources... but yea

It shouldn't be too hard to rebel. I'm sure 4chan is on it in their own special way, but I think they would be far better skilled at simply making monitoring of the Internet an infinitely regretable experience. Just make sure they cannot help but frequently see things that they can never unsee.

It depends, there's a lot of law about these things, if you're transmitting from you countries waters, that internet is that countries. You could set up a personal local intranet in international waters.

Quite frankly this bill wouldn't worry me if I was American, life goes on, the world keeps spinning, and if you actually read the document they're more interested in DHCP records, not the lesbian porn you're watching on xvideos.

To be honest... I thought the internet already was logged and spied on...

It probably is, but it's to stop the bad guys more than to check if you downloaded your favourite album illegally. I don't care if I get spied on if it means that they might catch some terrorist or something down the line.

Instil some faith in the government for once we might be surprised. Things generally can't get much worse at the moment.

If you're talking about the American government, we're as corrupt as we can get. We're just not nearly as showy about it as Africa or North Korea. Things can get worse, and I'm confident they will.

If I was some paragon of responsible internet usage, I would have no qualms. But like just about every single person here, I pirate things I want but cannot afford and selectively exchange personal information on the internet. Even if they don't actually use this information against me, they can, and I don't like it.

Don't keep up with U.S. politics much do you?

I'm more worried about "Ten Strikes" bill. But both bills seem way too extreme to actually pass. How are they even going to sort through the near limitless data for this one?

Jesus Christ people, aren't there worse problems in the world. Even if this becomes a law the government would almost definitely need a warrant to access the information.

So unless your hoarding plutonium or abducted children in your (sex) dungeon, who really gives a shit?

So "nothing to hide, nothing to fear"? The justification used by every totalitarian regime to eliminate privacy and liberty.

FYI, ISP's in the Netherlands are forced to keep records like that for 2 years I think. But they won't give them up unless the court directly orders them to do so, which a judge can rarely justify. So yeah, kind of useless.

This law on it's own may ultimately be harmless. But combined with other laws they're pushing on this country state-by-state, such as the one that deems anything that causes "emotional distress" on the internet to be punishable by incarceration (which was passed, btw), a domino effect can be created. Stacking law on top of law, with the promise that you'll screw up somewhere. Opening the door for them to justifiably invade your privacy.

I can't expect you give a shit, since this isn't happening in your country. But when it does, you'll come crawling down from your cross to bitch like the rest of us.

If you are American, then you need to get your head out of your ass and stop comparing the violation of your basic liberties by an increasingly totalitarian government to something as comically extreme as hoarding children in your basement.

Look I'm not defending the law. All I'm saying is people are overreacting too much. It's like saying the government has access to your medical records or bank details because technically they can if they get a warrant.

The government won't be able to touch this information unless your convicted of some crime. And who knows, maybe they'll actually get evidence against a paedophile with this information. I just don't get why people insist going on a morality crusade over something like this, the USA isn't (yet) under some Stalinist regime.

Jail the poor mentally ill man who has never touched or supported the abuse of children, and put him on the sex offenders register for life.

Blunt and idiotic 'lifestyle' laws which get passed every month + Incisive invasion of personal freedom = Nothing good.

How is watching child porn not supporting the abuse of children?

That said, any mildly sane paedophile would be able to get around this sort of tracking.

The government acknowledged this issue in a recent press conference. Their response was "Trololololol"

Life goes on, the World keeps spinning, worry about more important things, if you get caught doing something illegal on the internet, do the time you deserve, simple as that, and when something like this inevitable comes to the UK, I still won't care, life will still go on, and the World will continue to keep spinning.

Really STM? Sounds pretty ghastly to me.

I'd be pretty pissed if the Government starting hoking through my internet footprint, as it were;

Everything on Facebook will be monitored, whatever IM you use will be monitored and there will no more trolling Omegle trying to entrap potential pedophiles. And I won't be able to torrent like I use to

STM's Avatar
Technically they can catch you real easy if you torrent/ illegal download already but they don't have the time or want to do so seemingly so I wouldn't mind if they brought this law in, it would barely affect me, and if I got caught by it, then fair enough and I would do the time as anyone who gets caught committing a crime should.

Yeah it's so easy for 16 year old white boys that don't pay for any of their own shit isn't it?
Wait till you're a penniless adult with half the attention span and hard up for entertainment. You're going to be torrenting like the rest of us.
