I got a job (continued)

Posted 07-20-2011 at 04:48 AM by STM
Well, I just realised that if I work normal hours at minimum wage for the majority of my last and longest school holiday ever...I'll be making under £1000, so I got that wrong. And I looked at a random train ticket fair to a platform in central London, so only about 10 miles away if that. It costs £13!! I think I had a heart attack. And why the fuck do I have to pay for an adult ticket? I'm 16 not 18, I can't vote, I can't buy M games, worst of all I can't order my own alcohol yet.

So should I go and buy a child's ticket? Which is marginally cheaper and risk fare evasion? Only thing is I have to work out some way of commuting cheaply or all my money is going on the journey!

I'm serious it is a large chunk. Even at a child's rate, £8 a day for five days for 6 weeks is £240 leaving me with just over £500. x_x Does anyone here with a little more experience think they can help me out and give me a few pointers?

Walking and cycling to London is out of the question, it's a few hours walk and cycling wouldn't be much quicker. Also I don't want a rail card but it seems that it's my only option. =/

Fucking commuting for shit pay.

I'm going to be renting a place on my current wages, which is about twice as much as yours... roughly.

The rent is £90 a week not including food, electricity, broadband, heating, clothes, tobacco and cat food/toys. This will run a total close to £600 a month. Stop complaining.

Also, I'm going to be feeding three mouths as well so the estimate should be slightly higher. I may forsake broadband until I can afford it, or save up enough for a year then pay for the year it one swoop.

I'm not complaining Ridg3, I'm trying to find out if there's a way to commute to London cheaper.

£500 a month for a 16 year-old isn't exactly a small amount.

In other words, deal with it.

You must cycle slower than my dead grandma then. Surely 10 miles on a bike is perfectly doable?

And stop bitching about low pay. You're fucking 16. Little brat.

Instead you get mauled by London traffic. And Havoc, shut the fuck up, for the first time in my life ever I'll have a little bit of money so I can get myself something nice. I might want to maximise the amount I make instead of wasting it on train travel. And I'm not even moaning as I said before so blow it out your arse before you accuse me of being a little brat. If you think I'm a brat I'd love for you to come and spend a night in my house and see what it looks like, how much money anyone in my family has. The fact that I have to wait until next month to get a haircut because right now we're all flat broke. I can't stand people talking down to me about money it's the worst thing.

Get one of these, dude. Man, I'm so going to miss this next year. It's £25 for the year and saves a third off your fares - And even cheaper if you buy one for 3 years. It'll pay for itself after 3 or 4 journeys.

http://www.16-25railcard.co.uk/online

Or you can risk your life dodging the London traffic cycling to work if you have balls of steel, even with that new cycle infrastructure they put in which is fucking useless and wasn't planned by people who actually cycle - Cyclists and cars are still mixed together and you get ignorant tosspots like this prick to deal with. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea?!

But yeah, learn a lesson from this. Don't accept a minimum wage job without looking at how much it'll cost you to get there first - Especially in this country where public transport is both shit and costs you an arm and a leg.

EDIT: Oh wait sorry, my suggestion is invalid. I just remembered that you can only use it after 10am, Monday to Friday. Peak and off-peak hours are such bullshit.

Of course if your job starts after that then this won't affect you.

As DH suggested, don't buy a ticket each day because you'll save lots of money. If you didn't know that I can now understand why you hate your public transport system so much.

Also, shut up and stop being such a whiny little brat.

I love how you tell us your family's flat broke in the same breath as telling us "I'll have a little bit of money so I can get myself something nice". Of course you're not a brat, no siree.

Well yes, I'd like something nice for once.

Thank you very much DH I was thinking of getting a railcard but it didn't say on the site as far as I could see, that it was only for off peak hours, I would of ended up wasting even more money. But yer, my Dad set it up for me because he has friends in the business, so I didn't really research it, turns out he's not even sure how far into London it is...or even if it is in London. =P I think I'll have to contact the employer tonight to sort it all out.

Oh and Phylum, are you jumping on the bandwagon as well? Because I don't think Havoc needs a little puppy following him around. Who the fuck are you calling a brat, you went on holiday to England all the way from Australia and you're buying flutes or whatever, don't you fucking call me a brat when your every want is catered for you arrogant little arse hole.

great now I'm raging again, so much for trying not to do that.

Actually complaining about being broke and in the same sentence complaining about wanting something material and, frankly, unnecessary DOES seem bratty, and then the whole "We're broke" thing doesn't really get to peoples hearts that well.

In people eyes its mostly: "Oh you're broke? Then stop buying frivolous shit."

I understand that you want something nice once in a while. But still, you aren't conveying your message very well.

Also, you are right to feel annoying having to give away half your salary to transport(Though there seems to have been found a solution now), but you know... It's either the job, or no job at all.
Unless you find out closer by.

Anyway, You have no idea how easy it is to cut hair. I cut my own hair, and I think it looks quite nice. Don't you know anyone who can cut hair?
You could also look up tutorials. Trust me... the money saved is great. Specially if you're broke.

If I had known how fun it is to cut hair, I probably would have gone to hairstyling school instead

I could cut my hair because it's only 4 on top 3 back and sides but the thought off putting a trimmer to my head scares me shitless =P if I made a single mistake I'd look a loony. XD

When I said I wanted something nice I'm actually putting it into my life savings so that I can chose either a 125cc bike or some bee keeping equipment next year. Both of those things are going to become important at some point or another but they are also nice.

That or I finally fix my room up and get it re-plastered and painted/ wall cracks sealed. Which might be fun.

If I get fined I'm gonna be smart arsy and ask for a beer since I'm classed as an adult for tickets. If that fails, I can run pretty fast so when the train stops...I'll use my 100m sprint. XD
