We just watched it. And really liked it. It's been a while since I've chuckled throughout a movie. Especially an animated movie.

It really is a different breed of movie. I suspect a few imitators are soon to follow. It definitely raised the bar for CG animated films, which can account for why films like Rio and Mars Needs Moms got little to no attention after the release of Rango. Then again, Mars Needs Moms bombed so hilariously hard on it's own.

I got the Rango Blu-Ray combo pack. Mostly because it has more special features than standard DVD release (sly bastards). The clerk at Target forgot to remove the security case though, so I had to go back and have them open it. Bastards.

I'd rent before you buy. Rango is an awesome film, but not everyone loved it. Don't waste your money on something you may end up hating. Though if you have any taste at all, you will like this movie.

I've heard it's quite good. I'm more of a Pixar fan, but I might give this a shot.

I thought Rango was refreshingly twisted after two decades of Pixar's super-smooth visuals and saccharine characterization.

I have to say that the scene with the moles/gophers/critters riding the bats during the shoot-out/chase was fucking epic. And I never say epic. But I can't think of a better word to describe that sequence of events. But seriously, really good. And what Hans Zimmer did with the music? Fuuuuuck, perfect.

I'm usually not a fan of Zimmer, but his work for Rango is phenomenal. It's so quirky and bizarre at times, but also perfectly captures that classic Morricone charm.
I have the soundtrack on my computer, actually. There's alot of pieces that are missing that I would have really liked to hear, but that's a commonplace annoyance for film scores, especially Zimmer who prefers to make lengthy suites over spot-scoring. You can hear in some of the pieces the progression from "stage clown" to "western hero" by switching it up between circus organ/organ grinder to banjos and dobros.

Yeah, I'm not much of a Zimmer fan either, but he did a good job with Rango. I also had a good time picking out and identifying all of the various critters and characters in the film, and felt that they did a pretty good job. Except with Bad Bill, who was clearly a Beaded Lizard, yet listed as a Gila Monster, and Beans, who was apparently supposed to be a Desert iguana, but looked nothing like her real life counterpart. She was more gecko-esque than anything else. Still, small complaints, and more observations than actual complaints, I guess.

I love that the secondary cast was a who's-who of the best B-list actors. Charles Fleischer, the guy who played Roger Rabbit, played a character with like two lines, and the guy who sounds like Jim Varney but isn't Jim Varney played Buford. Also Bill from King of the Hill.

Oh Stephen Root? Stephen Root isn't really a B-List actor at all. If anything, I'd call him a character actor. I mean he was fucking Milton from Office Space. But he's really been in...Man, a lot. Without looking at imdb, I can think of at least 10 things I've seen/heard him in within the past year or so. And they've been recent.

It bothered me that Timothy Olyphant played the Spirt of the West. I like him as an actor, but to hear him pretty much reprise his role as Sheriff Bullock from Deadwood was sort of...Annoying. And then it made me wonder if he was intentionally trying to emulate Clint Eastwood the entire time he was on Deadwood, which annoyed me further.

Fun fact about Clint Eastwood: My mom met him in late 70's, early 80's, and he was quite...Flirtatious. She was in a restaurant he happened to own, and she bumped into him on her way to the bathroom. She spilled his drink. He bought her a drink.

Stephen Root played at least two or three roles in the film, and unless you really know him, you could barely tell which ones he was. Even in a town full of homogeneous western derelicts, he managed to bring that uniqueness to the individual characters. Great work on his part. It pays to hire actual character actors. They bring a level of wholesomeness to it that celebrities chosen for their status cannot.

The rest of the cast was padded by random members of the staff. Gore Verbinski played a few of the parts himself, including Sgt. Turley - the bird with the arrow through his face. I think they all did a great job.

As for Olyphant's role as The Man with No Name, I really did feel like he wasn't the best choice for the role. Especially considering the role was essentially just Clint Eastwood. His part was pretty minor though, and his impression was okay, so I'm not going to be a stickler.

Agreed. I really loved Harry Dean Stanton as Pappy, or whatever his name was. He's another character actor I'm always happy to see/hear in a film.

Balthazar. I loved him. Though admittedly, his diseased-looking penis nose was a bit jarring for me at first.

Yeah, highly rendered in all of its disturbing detail. Have you seen the Rango figurines that Sideshow Collectibles put out? If not for the hefty pricetag, I'd scoop them right up. Hell, I'm still considering getting Rango.

I wish they'd do a full line of characters, though, because I'd really like to have the Owls, Bad Bill, and Balthazar.

I was trawling the internet for an accurate, wind-up Mr. Timms toy. There's alot of completely off-model coin-purse versions. I finally found what I was looking for on ebay for like 30 bucks. Not worth it for 5 cents worth of plastic, not to mention they were handed out as part of a viral campaign for free.

I may be dumb enough to pay 10$ for one though, should it ever rear its head on the interbutts.

They should make Rattlesnake Jake. He was my favorite character despite being in for less than 10 minutes show time. He seemed like the perfect character for mutual evil.
