Kitten Woes

Posted 07-01-2011 at 01:52 PM by Nemo
So, some time ago, my mother came over to celebrate my birthday. Better late than never.

While she was here, she found three kittens outside, and managed to get them inside, since she's a bleeding heart animal lover. Don't get me wrong, I love animals too. I don't know what I'd do if some of my pets were hurt.

But for some reason, the cats outdoors always get a specific illness. I don't know what it is, though. For some reason, their eyes swell up, and then... Well, we've only seen two cats survive this, and one is missing an eye. Invariably, all of the kittens outside have gotten this disease or infection, and have either died from it, or for reasons unknown.

We're keeping the kittens in what used to be my mother's bedroom, and trying to give them medicine, but nothing seems to help them. I don't really know what to do.

I tried to get some pictures, but trying to get pics of a kitten with a large bulbous eye, who in all probability is thinking "Where am I, why is that large smelly man holding a square thing, and why does my eye hurt," isn't an easy task.

Warning, these are blurry and aren't pretty.
This Siamese one has the worst of it. We were sure the eye was going to pop or fall out weeks ago.

I don't really know what to say about this kitten except that she looks exactly like the previously mentioned pirate cat.

And lastly, the one who is completely fine and probably shouldn't be in that room anymore.

I just don't really know what to do about any of them.

Did you bother getting a proper diagnosis from an actual vet? Because 'giving them medicine' sounds pretty vague. Other than doing that, there's not much else you can do for them.

The vets in this area are fucking horrible people, and literally just gave us "We don't deal with cats" as an answer.

Jesus.. I remember I had a dream filled with kittens today. They were warriors at my fort of some sort.

Do you have an SPCA/Humane Society in your area/county? They'll be able to refer you to the vet they use/provide care.

Google can help you a lot better than we can for self-help, answers range from using contact-lens solution and disposable cotton pads, to simply using salt water.

They really need to see a vet to identify what's wrong with them - If it's spreading between them then it sounds like a virus. If you can't do what DI suggested, try asking every vet in the area yourself if they are sympathetic to cats (that's pretty weird that they're not, though - You'd think they'd want the business...), or at least try asking them where you can go to get them treated.

Good luck to you.

listen to DI, it might be something really easily treated. if it isn't treated, it's only going to get worse. the cats can't take themselves to the vet.
