Lovable Games 03 - Playstation 2 Games

While many people are playing Playstation 3 games, I've decided to spend a few days playing some games on the Playstation 2 console. I will list my favourite PS2 games and will give you descriptions and reasons why I like them.

Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End:
This game does a fantastic job of recreating the two films Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. In terms of areas you have the Prison Fortress, Isla de Pelegostos, Port Royal, Tortuga, Isla Cruces, Singapore, Shipwreck City and all the ship battles in the series. The cutscenes are amusingly done and there are also 'Jackanisms' (which are quick time events that require precision presses of buttons to execute fancy moves at key points in the story).

There is a fantastic challenge mode (which is co-op friendly) which gives players a lot to do and also lets you unlock many of the characters in the series such as Davy Jones, Tia Dalma, Norrington, Governor Swann, Captain Teague and more. There are unlockable swords, collectables and achievements to keep you busy for a long time.

Way of the Samurai:
A fantastic game which is like Grand Theft Auto in an ancient setting. Do you rescue the damsel in distress? Or do you join up with the bad gang and wreak havoc? It feels great to have so much freedom and the music really fits the theme.

Spider-Man Friend or Foe:
This is an easily accessable brawler featuring most of the Spider-man characters. While the characters in the game are based on the film appearances, the story is closer to the comics and is quite funny. The idea of Spider-man teaming up with his most hated enemy is quite interesting in a kind of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" way. It's a shame you can't swap out Spider-man himself, but the sidekicks are funny and have a large number of voice clips which are played at various parts in the story.

Global Defense Force:
For anyone who hasn't played one of these games, these are low budget science-fiction games in which the player fights against giant insects. The first level is a fantastic introduction as you're plunged right in the heart of london, defending Parliament and Big Ben from giant ants. There are also flying insects, spiders, UFOs and even a Godzilla-like monster. There is a wide variety of guns including rifles, shotguns, launchers, sniper rifles, flamethrowers and lasers. There is co-operative gameplay and you can also enter vehicles. Mindless fun!

Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires:
I think that this game is fantastic. Lead your army across different battlefields and defeat enemy generals. Pick an existing officer to lead your army or create your own. Use the strategy cards available to you in order to gain the upperhand. You can upgrade weapons, recruit warriors and even get a horse or elephant! Very replayable and a lot of fun.

The Matrix Path of Neo:
A fantastic brawler game that takes you from the training constructs on Nebuchadnezzar right to the final fight with Smith in the rain. You’ll battle cops, SWAT teams, Agents, exiled programs using a combination of gun fu, metal poles and your own fists and feet. Most of the moves in the series are here including the slow-motion punch, the triple mid-air kick and the 360 pole sweep. You gain more combos and moves as you progress through the game and there are cheats for you to unlock. Overall, a fantastic game and very fun.

That's it for now. Let me know if you like any of these games.

None of these are classics. You need to play more PS2 games if these are your favourites.

Sorry for my wording. "Classic" was a bad choice.
Don't get me wrong though, I've played Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Destroy All Humans 2, Path of Neo. These are just the games that I regularly play when I take out my PS2.

You missed Quake 3 and WRC 4!

Quake 3 on PC was a classic. Quake: Revolution (Quake 3 ported onto the PS2) was not. It included some dumb levelling system and had a vague story. I also struggled to play it with a controller. Strafe jumping was impossible, so I had to walk everywhere the long way.

I thought it was pretty good. The PC version is better just because of the mouse and customizable controls.

Fuck rying out loud! Stop filling the blog feed with posts that could and should have been posted in the What Are You Playing Right Now? thread.

But these are the games he likes and not necessarily the game he's playing right now.

So? I don't think anyone, with the possible exception of you, cares about these. If he really wanted to post them, he should start a thread in non-Oddworld gaming.

All I said was why it wouldn't really be good to post them in the what are you playing now thread. I agree that these should be in a new thread but no need to go over the top about it.

If you'd like me to post these in the non-Oddworld games forum then by all means I can do that, no problem. It was just my belief that they fitted in more with the "blog" format than as a forum post.

If this blog wasn't about games, there wouldn't be an issue. But here there is some crossover with the non-Oddworld gaming forum section.

Oddman360, Nate, Phylum, you have all made valid comments.

WFC is okay, but I prefer Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Nothing more fun than getting cop cars to smash into each other).

He said "I've decided to spend a few days playing some games on the Playstation 2 console", which implied to me that he was playing these specific games. Maybe not.

Even still, this could have been a "What PS2 games do you kinda like?" thread.
