Selling out my principles to Apple Inc.

Posted 09-05-2007 at 08:42 PM by Nate
I've always said I'd never get an iPod. Sure, they're sexy devices but they're way too trendy for my liking. My first mp3 player was a Creative one. So was the second, replaced under warrantee after the first died a painful death from falling. Which, come to think of it, is also how the second Creative one died - on the Ellis Island ferry. MP3 #3 was a Sony NW-HD5; a totally awesome player. Check out the reviews; the only bad thing any one can say about it is that you have to use the Sony software to synchronise it.

Now that that one has died (not sure how), I'm the market for a new player. I was checking out eBay for second hand NW-HD5's (they're no longer being made) but now Steve Jobs has announced the iPod Touch. It's a highly sexy device that is essentially an iPhone without the phone. An mp3 player that can run apps, connect to the internet through wifi and occassionally play music and videos. The only problem is that it costs $549AU for the 16GB version.

I've spent all day trying to think of people to hit up for the cash - "Mum, remember how you didn't give me a birthday present this year? Well here's something only 11 times your usual birthday budget". What with saving to travel, I really don't think it's going to happen.

Damn.

Screw travel.

If you buy Ipod all you pay for is a brandname and a very big pile of junk. Don't do it.

Ugh, Nate, I had respect for you, and not just automatic respect for you being superior in rank and such, REAL respect.

Sony makes some of the best MP3 players, and usually pretty cheap, too, get one of those.
Or a sandisk, pretty much the two best 3rd party makers of budget-price personal listening devices.
The Ipod touch is an Iphone without the phone, get a Nokia E70 if you're that desperate.
(And yes, I did get that from Maddox.)

Sony and Sandisk only make small solid state mp3 players these days. My music collection currently resides in the 6-7GB range; far too big for any of the available options from those manufacturers.

And I really don't want an iPhone. It seems to me to be great at everything but making calls. I'll stick with my current phone, thanks very much.

Ah, why not get something that supports an SD card?

Or even *gulp* a PSP? You can play msuic on those, and with immeasurable ammounts of music, too.

Nah, far too expensive for something I'd never use. And it's way too big and ugly for my liking. I need something that can fit in my pocketses.

Fine. Be difficult.
I have one final idea.

A minidisk player.
They're small, have a rechargeable battery, and though they are kind of high maintenance, tend to last a long time.

The only drawback is having to remove and replace disks for some msuic.

Minidisks. XD

Just buy the thing, an mp3 player is an mp3 player. The only reason I don't own one like this is because I buy cheapies that get knocked around too much.

Perhaps get the extended family involved? Get this whole scabbing ring going.
