Lovable Games 01 - Call of Duty: Headquarters Mode

Posted 05-15-2011 at 05:39 AM by AlexFili
For those who speak to me often, you’ll know that video-gaming is a major hobby of mine. I’ve decided that once a week, I’ll write a new article about particular games that I find enjoyable. I will go into detail about what exactly I like and what I don’t like.

While I do enjoy the Zombies mode of the Call of Duty games, I’m going to have to put my enthusiasm aside for the moment and instead talk about one of my favourite ever First Person Shooter game modes. That mode is called Headquarters.

If you go back to FPS games in the 90s, some of them had a mode called “King of the Hill”. In this mode, you could head to one area and attempt to capture it and keep it for the longest time possible.

In November the 5th 2007, Activision released an Infinity Ward game called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. One of the multiplayer modes, Headquarters would prove to be one of the most popular modes on the game (Because of the way experience is given while a capture point is held by a team).

In most Headquarters games, two teams of 5 to 6 people attempt to capture points on the map. These points on the map are signified by a box-shaped table with a computer on it. Capture points are revealed on the map one at a time and everyone rushes to capture the point first. On some of the more recent games, there is a 0:45 time period where the capture point cannot be captured (This is to stop people camping at various points of the map, hoping to capture the points instantly).

Once a point is captured by a team, the fun begins. The defending team cannot respawn while they have captured the headquarters. The attacking team can respawn and so will usually overpower the defenders. The defenders get points every few seconds while the base is under their control. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Regarding tactics, a good strategy is to throw some grenades at the capture points and then plant claymores. Camping can work, but it’s better if you stay in the general area and pick off the attackers from a medium range distance. Matches get exciting when you’re one of the last people on your team defending your capture point.

Headquarters mode has featured on the most recent Call of Duty games. This includes Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, World at War and Black Ops. It’s thrilling, it’s exciting and it’s one of the reasons that I absolutely love the Call of Duty series in general.

Next week, I’ll move onto another of my favourite modes: ZOMBIES!
Thank you for reading this article. See you soon!

Ever since Call of Duty 4, the series went down hill, do a decent game if you must do a review, like Fallout Tactics, that was a fantastic game in it's day. Oh my yes.

To be honest, Call of Duty's multiplayer is good. The game modes are good. What's bad? 75% of the community.

All those "xX Fu Si o0nZz Xx" named kids using a sniper all the time. Fucking annoying.

There might be overpowered perks or weapons, but that's the case with every game. There's something "OP" in every FPS game's multiplayer. Deal with it.

Sorry to be the killjoy but

I've never really liked Call of Duty. Co-op with mates is fun though. mainly because I always just take the piss.

I think Call of Duty is ok, the only reason most people know about it and like it is because of the excessive marketing.

Eventually it will collapse into itself and disappear, much like guitar hero

Well, for me as a Wii user I didn't have a lot of choice. Modern Warfare 2 never came to the Wii and World at War came without any zombies maps. Black Ops was pretty much the only Wii COD game that didn't have anything major sacrificed. It had zombies, multiplayer which was compelling and fun...

In all honesty, I probably won't buy another Call of Duty game. Guitar Hero and Call of Duty are decent franchises. They just need to know when to stop :P

You're not alone. It's mainly the people who play it though.
The unfair weapon/perk system which means if you've just started, you'll have no chance.

Ranking is utter crap, I was level 22 when I played it, and guess what, I was matched with a guy who had done it all twice and was rank 56. WTF!?

Spawning is broken, the opposing team can just screw you over since they usually camp at your spawn point and mow your team down.

'Skilled' players. Number 1 reason why I hate COD so much. The people with no life who scream down the mic and they tend to have names like IoX SnIp3zz. Really. They can't even spell. Aparently double letterss are cool.

ROFL! I have the exact same opinion. With Blur, yes the higher ranks get the better cars but the car you choose has like a 5% role in how successful you will be

Black Ops has lowered the boundary by giving you access to all perks and all weapon attachments by level 4, some of the first weapons you can get in the game are very strong. It did annoy me in COD4MW that you have to spend a very long time to even get the basic things like Claymore and Sleight of Hand.

This. Exactly this. Anyone that says they're bad games is an idiot. The community is the main problem.
