Afterlife

Posted 04-03-2011 at 02:52 PM by Dynamithix
I've been wondering this for pretty much all my life; what happens when you die? Of course there is no possible way to know for completely sure what happens, but some people have had near-death experiences and have told what afterlife is like.

What do you think? What will happen? Is there heaven and hell? Is there anything at all?

I heard that some people who had experienced a near-death experience said that there is nothing after death and it's just emptiness. I myself believe that that could be just the effect of dying for a short period of time and then being revived/living again. (That sounds weird.) It's like you didn't get "there" yet.

Anyways, I don't really have a point of view on the subject, I usually just get sad if I think about death and afterlife, I don't want to know.

It could be so that afterlife is what you imagined it would be, if you truly believed there is indeed a heaven, you might form an image of what it would be like and then it would be in your afterlife. It's hard to understand these kind of things. Or maybe it's just me, hah.

Anyways, discuss.

Maybe consciousness will at some point be discovered as a physical substance ANd then in future generations, certain greedy corporations will capture innocent people'sconsciousness and use it for energy.

@Abe619, you reckon we go to the same Heaven? We have the same God...just under a different name.

yes, the same.
Aw, I wish the comments had just ended there. That was nice.

It's like a beautiful little microcosm for where I'd like to think Abrahamists will get to eventually.

Also, respec' to Bullet Magnet for his TV analogy.

I'm quite looking forwards to death. Not that I want to die right now, but I find the thought that I won't have to put up with this shit for eternity is somehow reassuring, like thinking about going to bed while on your way home.

I was complimenting you on your open respect and appreciation of another's religion. So yes, that could warrant thanks if you want it to.

But you're right, the idea of what Abe619's heaven would be like is terrifying.

Heaven is cool. And yes MM, our two religions are the same really.

Yes, at least the base is the same.
It's like to hotels exactly the same shape but only decorations are different.
And I can't see why you think heaven is terrifying.

There'd be no point in doing anything in heaven. You could always say "I'll do it later". It's a procrastinator's worst nightmare.

Or a procrastinator's best dream. Besides, what the hell do you think needs doing in Heaven?

Nothing is "needed", you only "want" and then you get what you want.

Needs are removed from us, and all negative emotions like sadness, boredom, anger, hatred...etc...

and since needs are removed from us, you can like eat something just because you want to and you will never get fat or have an unhealthy body or anything like that.

I don't want all my negative emotions to be removed. I wouldn't be the same person without them. And being happy all the time would get fucking tedious.

I don't know, being happy all the time sounds pretty awesome even if it is unattainable.

But in Heaven, you lose the desire to do anything 'wrong'. So if swearing is bad (and I question whether it is), you won't want to do it any more.

Then were can we go and see the cage match between Ming the Merciless and Genghiz Khan? Can we not do anything we wanted? And to watch a cage match of brutal proportions, we're gonna need some negative emotions.

How do you know? You haven't been there.

Why do you want to do bad things anyway, I personally can't wait to enter Heaven God willing and to live a peaceful life with my lost friends and family in perfect tranquility for ever and ever amen. And besides, what little we know of Heaven from the Bible suggests that there is still a degree of free will or else Lucifer would never have risen. Perhaps people in Heaven are simply more devout and pious than we.

All scientific advancement due to intelligence overcoming, compensating for limitation. Can't carry a load, so invent wheel. Can't catch food, so invent spear. Limitations! No limitations, no advancement. No advancement, culture stagnates!

Imagining a worse hell is a tough job. That heaven is utterly infantilising, the dream of returning to childhood where your needs were taken care of for you. And you can't get out!

I don't want to lose any desires. I wouldn't be the same person.

Sitting around all day having my every desire (not that they'd be mine) fulfilled instantly sounds absolutely awful to me. If that's what Heaven is like, I'm glad I won't be going there.

Actually, I don't even believe in Heaven. But if I did I'd be glad I wasn't going there.

Have you read closely enough?
Doing what you want means you could always Get What You Want, Which means that if you want a certain evil desire to be back, you can get it back, although you can't harm any people from heaven with those bad desires, you can however get clones of them and do whatever you want.

heck you could even go to hell to watch someone get tortured or even torture them yourself and you wouldn't even get hurt because you are in hell because you went there willingly.

oh and also fetishes and homosexuality are removed from heaven but you can always get them just like negative emotions and desires, also you can create living beings in heaven. you can create worlds in heaven.

I assume you mean 'fallen' rather than 'risen', because otherwise that leads to a whole new concept of God vs Devil. In any case, Lucifer was an angel, not a human soul so you can't compare the two.

Of course, in Jewish theology, angels don't have free will either, so that's a moot point.

The only description of Heaven that I've heard that sounded remotely plausible from the perspective of being consistent with the theology and sounding kinda nice, is that the souls all merge together in to one massive choir, singing eternally in a state of bliss. So your personality and desires from your life are irrelevant and forgotten once you're in Heaven.

I still say there's no afterlife though.
