God damnit.

So one of my good friends about 10-15 minutes ago left me a suicide note, said he is ready, and logged off of MSN. I know he has had trouble with it in the past but I talked him through some of the times. He just logged off though, I didnt have a chance to respond. I called his phone several times, they went to voice message. I didn't know what to do, I know if I reported it his life could be hell, but I couldn't let him do it. I called 911, told them everything I knew, it was the most stressful talk of my entire life. Literally seconds after the phone call he messages me saying he doesn't have the materials, the police are already on their way. So now what? I don't know if I fucked up or anything, God I hate this.

Really? Your friend sounds like an attention hungry twelve year old. Next time offer to overnight some pills and a straight razor and be done with it. I mean one minute he's leaving a suicide "note" over msn [really?] and telling you he's ready, then later he's popping back up to confirm that while he is, in fact, still ready, he's unfortunately lacking the materials. Fucking hell, man.

Realistically though you probably did the right thing. Morally at least. But you friend still deserves to get the shit kicked out of him. The whole point of a suicide note is that the friends/family find it AFTER you're fucking dead, not before you do the deed. Again, attention hungry.

I know it seems stupid, but he really has little contact with a lot of people, Im sure MSN is his main line of communication. It would make sense that he might just tell me and then go do it.

I just got the call back, apparently he was telling them stuff that was bothering him, I was extremely surprised at that. I know he has been needing professional help for a while, so maybe this will be the push.

Eh, reverse pyschology is effective and all but you really can't take chances with stuff like this, I think you did the right thing in the long run.

Were you worried because you called 911 and then found out that he wasn't doing it? I'd say you still did the right thing. For one thing, you couldn't have known that he'd backed off and you had to prepare for the worst. I'm sure the cops are understanding about that sort of thing. Also, like you say, treating it seriously might force him to get some help about it.

Calling the police was probably the best idea. Even if it wasn't, it was better than doing nothing.

Calling the cops was the best idea as whether he went through with it or, maybe this will make him understand the seriousness of what he's doing and what he wants.
