Mac Sirloin, world traveller.

Posted 12-11-2010 at 10:57 PM by Mac Sirloin
Within the next four months I'm temporarily moving to Austria, Japan, Ireland, Great Britain, France, Bulgaria, Australia or New Zealand to work on an organic farm with Jordan. We'll be paid, have our own lodgings and be welcome to soak up as much culture as possible. We'll be there (wherever there is) from anywhere from 6 months to a year, most likely after I turn 19. It's through a "Give us your Young" co-operative program between Glorious Canada and all those places I mentioned (and a shitload more). I'd prefer Britain, Australia or NZ, myself. But we'll see. Anyone with the good grace to welcome us into their homes for a brief(ish) visit will receive a non-returnable voucher for involuntarily bear hugs and ass slaps.

Sounds like one hell of an experience. Travel like that is life-changing, lemme tell ya. You're going to love the shit out of it.

Do you know where specifically you'll be going in those individual countries? Cities/provinces I mean.

Not really. We've decided on New Zealand in the last half hour since it's pretty much exactly what we deserve.

Do you get to choose where you go, or do you just express a preference and some paper-pushing beaurocrate makes the decision?

Also, NZers love it even more when you ask them to count to the number above five and below seven.

Does that mean you won't be around to post on OWF as often anymore? Cuz that would be, you know, just horrible!

No, it means that I'm going to spend my first few years as an adult doing something incredibly fun and exciting that doesn't involve squatting in a lighting booth, defining myself by an internet subculture and molesting children.
And I'll make it a regular feature here to showcase just how amazing it is working across different countries and meeting people.

But hey, enjoy being a Student. Because that's always a completely unique experience, right?

I'm a student. Be nice. And good job on this man, just think, soon you will be the dusky, globetrotting wonderman of the century. Travel is the shit.

Also, what about language? A few of my mates and I are going to Bulgaria next year. And the language is a pain. All i've got so far is "Hello, my name is".

Personality, I'm very happy for you Mac. I think of everyone here, you're one of the few how actually has found pleasure and fun doing stuff that isn't necessarily found chronologically correct by society.

I can also imagine that working on a farm may be fun. It'd probably bore me after a while though, but I always enjoyed being at my farmer-side of the family.

A question though. Did it cost anything to be signed up for this thing, and do they truly just let you travel for 'free' while getting paid for the work you do? Also, is the pay good? Or at least substantial. Just curious =)

Shit... you should come to the fair, green pastures of Oireland. We would drink whiskey and eye up all the scantily clad women who dare brave the cold weather.

But good for you, I would love to do something like that were it not for previous commitments and I would love to do a bit of good honest work whilst seeing other countries and their cultures.

Shaman: Well, NZ is our first destination, so Language won't be that much of a barrier. I'm going to try to learn German or Japanese while I'm there, then we'll look into one of those two places. Japan will probably be 'stop' #2.

T-Nex: Manual Labour (Read:tedious, repetitive) is kind of s strong point for me, and learning how to work the ground will probably just be rewarding in and of itself. I'm not really in on it to be paid, but I know that we're basically left to our own devices with the money we earn. Part of it might go straight towards rent or something, though. As far as fees go, I believe it's basically a set price that covers our travel costs (there and back) and maybe a small administrative fee. It's less than $2,000.

Ridg3: I'd love to go Ireland. And not just because I have some vague ancestry from there. Technically we're avoiding it because my sister's hippy-dippy ubervegan superfriend is living there, and though he's a friend of mine (well, kinda), he's pretty much Jordan's least favorite person.

In short, we're avoiding an entire country because Jordan and I are smug little Nazis, but we'll be sure to make our way there eventually for some drinking and general skulduggery.
I'm making this sound like a night of bar hopping, cripes.

Uh...Bungle, you know that you'll be eligible to do this after your next birthday, right? Us both being Canadians and all. That's literally the only important parameter. That and not being a registered Sex Offender.

There's possibly a similar program in the states, but it may be specifically for students. Also proooobably less variety in terms of destination.

That's incredible. I respect that you decided to go out into the world outside the confines of a generic, lined-up career. This time will be amazing for you and I'm sure you'll be rewarded in ways most others won't be. It may be a bit early for goodbyes, but take care and have a safe journey and one hell of a time.
