I know a bit about semiotics.

I have to compare my chosen text (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iskBfH6bv3c) with two other texts of the same genre. What I can't figure out is (and this is probably a really simple problem), what the hell is the genre? And when I do find out, where could I find two texts to compare it to?

Right now, I'm going for the 'comedy' genre, and I'm thinking of comparing it to Knick Knack by Pixar and something else... but I can't shake the feeling that I'm doing it wrong.

How about you give us 100 words explaining what the heck Semiotic Analysis is?

I've been through five lectures and I still don't quite get it. I do sound really smart when I talk about it though!

It's analzysing the signs and symbols present in a text.

I don't know what genre that film is, but the most striking thing about it is that it's absurd.

I know, right? I just had to go ahead and choose the short film that doesn't follow any specific genre, and therefore doesn't have any convention to follow, thus resulting in me having no texts to compare it to.

What a bummer.

Take the easyish route and analyze it from a Marxist point of view, the snobby middle class guy is saved by the grubby beggar at the end. You could write several essays out of that alone.

Oh yes, I'm analysing it that way. It's just that it's part of the criteria to compare it to two other texts of the same genre. I'm thinking I might just take the easy way out and call the genre 'stylised animation'. Then compare the character designs and movements in a similar text (like... I dunno, Team Fortress 2 Meet the Team videos?), rather than the overall storyline.

Also problematic that the word limit is only 1000 words. I can see myself going -far- past that when I actually get into the proper analysis section of the essay.

I always found the same when I was in college. If I did a 1000 word analysis, it'd be around 1500 - 2000 words (if not more). It's hard to get it just the right length.

They're not actually limiting you to 1000 words are they?

....because that would just be stupid.
