Me and my brother rescued an old acoustic piano from a skip last night. We don't know how the fuck it ended up in there (although it is an unusually small piano - all the keys are there, but the body's not as big as I'd usually expect), but we had a job on getting it out. It's great. It's in a bit of a state, but it'll be just grand when we've got it all fixed up. It's out of tune and stuff, but we'll soon see to that. It plays just fine.
I've a recording of it we made ten minutes after we got it out of the skip here, if anybody's interested in how it sounds. It's a semitone below concert pitch, so we're going to get it all tuned up. It's staying at my brother's for my nephew to mess around on.

who's actually playing the piano there? because that is fucking great, no exaggeration. very good. love the piano.

and it blows my mind that people would skip such things, unless they're pretty damn rich.

That's me on the piano, but believe me, I am quite a bad player. Lots of good players would be able to tell you (but thank you, anyway - I am very grateful for your comment).

The people who chucked this must have been fucking nuts. It's a fine thing, and I am very happy that we found it. Much better than those poncy grand pianos.

Hah, seems like a lucky find you made. It's amazing what people chuck out - A couple of months ago my brother in law found a perfectly working epson printer/scanner in a skip. Totally nothing wrong with it, it even had the install CD in the scanner lid. :S

It's insane what you can find in skips.

We regularly go skip diving to get wood and plastic to make shit with. Amazing the high quality wood that gets thrown away.

supermarkets is another one. the stuff they chuck in those blue bins is still in date, undamaged and blatantly sellable. and its common knowledge.

I think what I find most amazing about Oddjob playing is that I actually know the song he's playing. Not only that, it's certainly not bad. I on the other hand truly play awful. But perhaps that's because I have never ever learned how to read notes.

You had better keep listening to that Scott Joplin. Brilliant stuff. I doubt that not being able to read music would be an inhibiting factor in the way you performed (unless you had an exceptionally bad ear). I'm quite a mediocre player, but I'm not the worst in the world, and I can't read a single note. I'm sure that given enough practise, you'll be great. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn the piano, especially when you do it by ear, so just keep it up, and I'm sure you'll be fantastic.

I do love the sound of old, weathered pianos. Nice playing too. That's incredible if you did that all by ear.

If you take up piano, I'd recommend taking lessons. It's easy to get stuck in bad habits when you're just beginning. Self-teaching can work too though. Joplin is a daunting challenge regardless of one's ability to read music as well.
