Quik Quiz

Posted 03-25-2010 at 10:22 PM by enchilado
Aha, see, I made it so 'quick' is just one letter away from 'quiz'!

Now, I want y'all to answer these here questions. Just copy+paste the questions into your reply, and answer them there before you post. Some if not most are trick questions, so be on your guard.

A man builds a rectangular house. Each wall faces North. Then he goes outside, and sees a bear. Is it possible to determine the colour of the bear's fur to a reasonable degree of certainty?

With only a matchbox and a single match, you enter a very cold and very dark room. In it are an oil lamp, an oil heater, and a candle - which do you light first?

What's 1 + 1?

If you have three apples and I have two, and I eat one of my apples, and you steal one of my apples, how many apples do you have?

At your 10 o'clock appointment, your doctor gives you four pills. He tells you they need to be taken no more nor less than an hour apart. You leave his office, then realise you don't know if you're supposed to eat them after meals or before. You turn to back in, but the 11 o'clock patient has just entered. Muttering to yourself, you sit down to wait until the doctor's lunchbreak an hour later. Finally you ask him, and he tells you you should eat them no less than half an hour before meals. Disappointed that this means you won't be able to have lunch until three, you leave for home, and, when you get there, you take the first pill. At what time will you take the last one?

My mobile does no have the capacity to copy+paste so I will have to improvise

(Houseman): No, the bear would probably be in front of the sun, or it's nightime.

(Matchbox): The candle, the other two may be empty.

(1+1?): It is a basic mathmatical equation also known as an addition.

(Apples): I would have four apples you appleless coot.

(Pills): 5:30pm

Actually, I stuffed up the pill question: there's two possible answers, and each one ignores a fact. Depends which fact you ignore :P

It's a polar bear, the house is on the north pole. You light the match first.

His house is at the South Pole, dick. It's a trick question, since there are no polar bears in Antarctica.

Indeed. Try white.

With only a matchbox and a single match, you enter a very cold and very dark room. In it are an oil lamp, an oil heater, and a candle - which do you light first?

Candle.

What's 1 + 1?

Probrably 2.

If you have three apples and I have two, and I eat one of my apples, and you steal one of my apples, how many apples do you have?

"You" would have 4.

... About three hours later.

The South Pole is Antarctica. The North Pole is the Arctic, so the house is at the North Pole.

If all the walls of the house face North, the house has to be located exactly on the South pole. Thus the existence of said bear is impossible.

I now see precisely where Meechmunchie is coming from. I do apologise. I was reading it thinking it was located on the north, which, I believe is fucking stupid. Dearest apologies.

Here are the possibly semi-correct answers:

No.

This one has no correct answer, but the candle sounds the most sensible to me. Since I listed several items and then said 'which', it must be one of those items; I didn't say 'what'.

It's a basic mathematical problem.

Four.

I'm afraid I stuffed up the question here, because there's conflicting evidence. But the two things it could be are a) later than 3.30 PM and b) 2.30 PM. The error I made was the number of pills, which should have been three. In this case, he would have finished the last at 2.30 PM - he said he wouldn't be able to have lunch until 3.00, meaning he'd finish them half an hour before that.

I really think it was supposed to be the match.

If I said "You come to a table with food on it. There is a cabbage, a cake, and an ice-cream sundae: which do you eat first?" do you think 'the table' would be a legal answer? Do you? Do you? Huh?
