Is it worth it?

Posted 02-09-2010 at 10:33 PM by enchilado
I'm thinking of spending AU$210 on Lego for my brother's eleventh birthday.

He says the Atlantis series is his favourite, although he hasn't any sets from it; and we looked at all them and he told me his three favourites out of that series, which are http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=8075, http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=8061 and http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=8058.

Now, out of those he likes Gateway of the Squid best, then the Neptune Carrier, and finally Guardian of the Deep. To buy all three sets is $175, plus $35 postage.

However: his birthday isn't until after Christmas. It's almost a year away. I'm not spending that much money for any occasion other than a birthday, but by the time his birthday comes around he may have new favourites.

Is it worth it to buy these sets (of which I think the Neptune Carrier is fairly awesome) while they're available, and hope he still likes them come his birthday, or should I wait until November or so and see what he likes best then, at the risk of him still liking these?

Will these still be available new in November? If so, I will wait until then, but if not... what should I do!?

Squid squid squid ^^

If you can afford it, it'd be a lovely thing. Even if he has new favourites, it's lego! He could build anything!

You really spend that much on your brother for his birthday?! I've never spent that much for anyone, ever. Nor received any present worth that much that wasn't spread over a decade's worth of birthdays.

Also, I guarantee if you buy it and store it away, he'll either find it and crack it open early or he'll open it when his birthday finally comes round and say "Why the hell did you give me that?"

Modern Lego is crap, therefore it's not worth it.

Max has a point. Older sets which left more to imagination and less one-set pieces were in my opinion better. Lego's still worth the price if you ask me though.

Wait, Altantis Lego? I must have. I've already got most of the Aquanaut and Diversub sets from yesteryear.

God, Aquanauts were great.

is that the Russian version? OH GOD I CRACK MYSELF UP

i agree that the original Lego was better. as long as you could find those little opening door things. and the windows and transparent blocks.

i had loads, but overtime they've been reduced down to 25% of what i originally had. lucky if i can build a bungalow now.

I'd wait. As you said, his tastes could probably change. Kudos for wanting to do something so spectacular, though.

I read somewhere that Lego has been moving away from that recently and have actually reduced the number of different pieces they make.

Nate, I've never spent this much money on anyone before. But I'm going to now

Well, I agree about the use of pieces; my favourite sets are the old 1980s Pirate sets, which I have a number of... even if they're scattered through a huge box of Lego I have.

I love the design of the Neptune Carrier, and although I don't actually play with Lego, I would, if I had enough space in the one-room cabin four of us dwell in, probably set up a line of shelves with all my favourite Lego sets on it.

However, I don't have enough space to display them, so I'll just buy nice sets and give them to my brother to play with. He treats his Lego well, and keeps his nice, new sets away from all his older stuff (and doesn't mix Castle with Harry Potter, and so on), and he hasn't got a lot anyway.

I want to buy three sets; it's a nice number of Lego presents to open, in my opinion. I want them to be from the same line of sets, so they go together.

I'll wait a while, but probably buy these if nothing better comes up.

Thanks for the comments
