Another year of school

Posted 01-31-2010 at 08:30 PM by Taco
Today marks the start of my 6th and final year of high school. This is the one that counts and determines what I can get into in the future and blah blah blah, but the point is it's been 1 incomplete day of school and i'm already fucking furious.

I had to walk home in hot weather and black school shoes, for 8 kilometers, some of which were through a the bush (picnic grounds thing) because I finished early and couldn't be arsed waiting 2 hours for the school bus. I honestly can't be bothered with this shit until October. Working through exam revision and assessments last year while my mother went through birth, cancer and pneumonia in a space of a few months scarred me, and I really can't be fucked putting in so much effort this year.

On a lighter note I'm starting flight training in ~2 months.

You're in the AirTC?

Back in my day, we called you boys 'Fairies'.

I've been back at school for 3 days, and have already received generous homework.

Note: by generous, I mean lots

I'm starting school for the FIRST TIME EVER on Thursday. I'm doing Year 11, should be fun. I got my uniform and crap today. Although I'm seventeen this year, it's not until November, and you have to do Year 11 before 12 anyway. Doing Drama, Geography, English, Maths A, Visual Arts and Creative Arts, but I may change in a couple of weeks if I don't like 'em.

Not to be pesimistic, but a friend of mine has been trying to get a cadetship with any carrier for the past year or two. He was recently flown out to Hong Kong for stage two interviews with Cathay Pacific but didn't progress. He went through private courses, excelled, and has an incredible amount of hours and experience with a multitude of different aircraft. The same for the majority of his air buddies.

He even works at Rex in operations. No one is hiring pilots despite the ever decreasing amount of them in service.

Which really sucks, he's been devoted to becoming a pilot most of his life

Yeah I know it's extremely difficult to get into the cadetship unfortunately, but they're not that interested in how much experience you have as it's designed for people with 0 hours. The thing I need to really nail is to demonstrate professionalism, leadership and dedication.

a very old mate of mine from secondary school was obsessed with anything that flew, and was determined to be a pilot. the time came when we all had to see the Careers Officer, who was this disabled bloke in a wheelchair with the nickname 'Wheels'.

he said my mate was daft to think he could become a pilot, and he was a smart kid as well, nothing like me or my mannerisms. month later he left school for good of his own accord and it went downhill from there. last i heard he was in Wolverhampton, that was 4 years ago.

so yeah, don't take the shit they may give you and keep trying. it may seem easy now but it'll most likely get incredibly harder. good luck with it.

that being said, keep a level head and stay realistic.

AirTC = Air Training Corps. Like high school army cadets, but for the airforce. They wore very pretty sky blue uniforms. I just made that assumption due to the inclusion of both school and flying in your OP.

What does an airline cadetship involve? Have you considered studying to be a commercial pilot at university? I'm told Swinburne's course is quite good.

Ah the air force cadets. The Qantas cadetship involved doing the bachelor of aviation and management for 3 years at swinburne, while doing flight training at Oxford Aviation academy at moorabbin ap. And WoF made an excellent point. I do have a backup plan, but not a 100% safety net so I gotta work on that, and fast. Thanks guys
