It's not a joke, nor intended to be funny. This is actual and hard science fiction (as opposed to, say, Star Wars) and outlines the origins and science of vampires in Peter Watt's Blindsight. Which is about tracking down an alien life-form in deep space, incidentally, not vampires. Personally, I suspect Lovecraftian shenanigans in the works.

It reminds of the kind of notes that say Tolkien or Frank Herbert made about their worlds. Notes that helped them create a more believable fiction. Notes that were not meant to be released, as they weren't interesting without the context of the story.

It's like a mockumentary, except this is in the form of a presentation of a scientific study, also establishing FizerPharm as evil bastards and delightfully lampooning the penal system and perfectly backward social values of Texas.
