Theory with Joe and Luke

Posted 11-21-2009 at 08:46 PM by Wings of Fire
A short excerpt from near the end of a much longer conversation in which I slowly pissed off my brother more and more.

:
Teh Joe says (04:39):
*The old man symbolizes how destiny is safeguarded by great men, the sheer falls indicate what happens to people who do not exhibit strict social conformity. The fact it is deepest night indicates the fact that every human is born into complete and total cultural darkness, unless we let ourselves be morphed and shaped by the old men in power we shall not be able to suceed at life, the blatent mysoginism in this depiction is further shown by the snake headed staff, the snake is a phallic symbol and also means a cunning yet sly person, like the old men who have answers to everything, yet know little

Luke -Once sealed in blood...- says (04:39):
*For fuck sake...

Teh Joe says (04:39):
*You still don't get it =D

Luke -Once sealed in blood...- says (04:41):
*The Hermit is the personal quest for wisdom. We have felt wisdom, and been taught it, now we must seek it for ourselves. We must have purity of purpose (white), there is peril (cliffs), what we have learned lights the way (lantern), and we must trust intuition (snake).

Teh Joe says (04:41):
*I don't think you're right
*I think I'm right
*I think you're wrong.

Luke -Once sealed in blood...- says (04:43):
*You think that the moors, the renaissance philosophers, and the revivalist magi of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn developed and approached these archetypes with post-modernist feminism? O.o

Teh Joe says (04:43):
*I think it doesn't matter
Teh Joe says (04:44):
*What matters is how I approach them now

Luke -Once sealed in blood...- says (04:45):
*You are being a fool. You are not approaching them. You are sending the words of dead men to assail them. The first thing any tarot reader or student learns is to conduct meditations to clear your mind of prejudice, hope, and prior knowledge.
Luke -Once sealed in blood...- says (04:46):
*They must be seen as met for the first time. Hence why they were taught to children in sequence.

Teh Joe says (04:47):
*Nonono
Teh Joe says (04:48):
*I am approaching them
*You are sending the words of dead men to assail them
*Man, you suck at theory
I love my brother sometimes.

He was asking me to interpret some tarot cards to prove the universallity of what he believes.

He was very pissed when I started interpreting them in every way imaginable including postcolonial, psychoanalytic and feminist theory.

How the hell is a snake supposed to symbolise, of all things, intuition? Of all the things snakes and snake-like things can do or seem to do, intuitive deduction is not one of them.

Why not just have a card that says "intuition" instead of making confused forays into herpetology as a means of divination?

Because then you couldn't interpret the Snake Card as meaning 'sneakiness', when the person is clearly not very intuitive.

Just like Death doesn't mean 'death'. Except for the times it does.
