Your views on racism

Posted 10-11-2009 at 12:59 AM by STM
Hey recently I read about Bruce Forsyth saying Paki, I don't understand why that's racist?

Scottish people are scots, where limeys to the Americans pre WW2, why is Paki, and abbreviation of Paistani racist.

Why do we have to be so careful about what we say to everybody these days, when did black board become racist, when did popular nursery rhyme black sheep become indecent.

Please ost your replies, I would like to see what other people think.

well because paki is less of an abbreviation and more of a term that has had widespread use as being derogatory

It was Anton Du Beke that said it, not Bruce Forsyth.

If, a black person says nigger, it is alright. If a white person says that, he'll be thrown in jail and hated for the rest of his life.

If we openly say Nazi, nobody really cares. If a German says that, everything goes to hell.

Something seems a bit backwards. But that's our world. Backwards.

I think racism in the UK is totally out of context and overblown, mainly because only whites seem to be able to be racist. It would be very interesting to see what would happen if whoever it was was refered to as a dumb honkey.

i'm not bothered if i'm called a 'Limey', but i do get irritated when people get stereotypical about the English. we don't constantly drink tea, eat scones or walk around wearing top hats.

and i'm glad Brucey wasn't the one who said that insulting term, he's great.

Which is a problem. We really should.

if we did, i'd rather wear my flatcap and braces, and the upper classes could wear their top hats and waist coats. that would be good.

I hate hate when people complain about how the man is keeping whites down. Sure, it's stupid and it is positive discrimination. But boo fucking hoo. Us poor white people.

I know how you feel. I wear a bowler hat. I hate that misconception.

On the topic at hand, it's just political correctness gone fucking mental.

A rhyme about an anthromoporphic servent sheep whose defining character seems to be his wool colour maybe isn't the best rhyme to teach young children.

Find me somewhere, anywhere where it officially states that you can't call a blackboard a blackboard anymore because I swear it's just an urban rumour. Wikipedia calls them chalkboards because they come in a variety of colours.

baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?
yes sir yes sir three bags full.
one for the farmer and one for the dame,
and one for the little boy who lives down the lane.
i think you're looking too far into it. he was a black sheep giving wool to people, and you do get black sheep, obviously. pretty innocent in my opinion.

do you genuinely believe that its racist, or are you just doing this for the sake of argument?

i wasn't agreeing with Scrabtrapman, i was agreeing with Oddjob. i cant stand the term 'Paki'.

The point is that changing it to "white board" because it is apparantly racist is fucking ridiculous. And please don't tell me that you are under the impression that "Baa Baa Black Sheep" is racist. If so, I have lost all respect for you. The colour is it's defining characteristic purely because sheep are mainly white, apart from the lambs in the Lake District. I don't care how far you look into it, there is no racist subliminal message.

"Paki" is only a racist word in a hateful context (which, unfortunately, is the context it is most often used in, which is why it always sounds so hateful). I dislike the context it is used in, not the word itself.

EDIT: MA bet me to it. Slight apologies , WoF, but my points still stand.

They changed it to chalkboard, whiteboards are COMPLETELY different things and chalkboards is the actual proper term.

That's fair enough, then, but the principles remain the same. I still feel that we are second class citizens in our own land, which I believe is the cause of much racism. I'm sure you think that there's a problem with that statement, so let's agree to disagree.
