Evolutionary Genealogy

Posted 10-03-2009 at 04:04 AM by Bullet Magnet
The theory of evolution explains how and that we are cousins of the great apes (not descendants from them) and cousins of all other species. This is a very simple idea that many people struggle with nonetheless.

"Cousins" is meant in a very real sense. New species emerge over the course of thousands of generations, and if you trace your family tree back far enough (were we privy to such information) we could trace the exact familial relationship.

Of course, genealogical records are frequently pretty bad after just ten generations, let alone thousands or millions, most of which consisting of ancestors who weren't even human. But that is not a hindrance to plotting our relationships! We know how long it takes for one generation of most of the world's animals to spawn the next, and using genetic and fossil evidence we can make pretty good estimates.

So without further ado:

Well, I'll be the ancestor of a Dragonfly! (Note: Read this in the same way as 'son of a gun')

This is wrong on at least two levels, maybe more.

Needs more invertebrates.

And plants.

And prokaryotes.

On the website it explains that as far back as prokaryotes and by extension the emergence of the eukaryotic kingdoms reproduction becomes complicated, as in sexual reproduction becomes rarer compared to rampant asexual reproduction, so representing these species as a function of relatives in a sexually reproducing family, as literal cousins must be, become impossible.

My great uncle was a thermophile who lived in the Marianas Trench. Never visited him much.

Yes, BM, that’s what makes it more challenging and hence I demand it.

There was a recent discovery of a "missing link" between apes and humans. It looks pretty spooky.

It's not a missing link.

There was recently also a formal description published of quite an old discovery. I didn't take a look. Ape evolution really bores me.

I had dinner the other night with my fifth cousin. Does that count for anything?

So you share a great-great-great-great-grandparent. Is he just about the most extended part of your family you keep in touch with, or is your family just really good at keeping track of itself?
