Evolutionary Genealogy

The theory of evolution explains how and that we are cousins of the great apes (not descendants from them) and cousins of all other species. This is a very simple idea that many people struggle with nonetheless.
"Cousins" is meant in a very real sense. New species emerge over the course of thousands of generations, and if you trace your family tree back far enough (were we privy to such information) we could trace the exact familial relationship. Of course, genealogical records are frequently pretty bad after just ten generations, let alone thousands or millions, most of which consisting of ancestors who weren't even human. But that is not a hindrance to plotting our relationships! We know how long it takes for one generation of most of the world's animals to spawn the next, and using genetic and fossil evidence we can make pretty good estimates. So without further ado:  |
