My Eleventh Blog: District 9

Posted 09-04-2009 at 11:22 AM by AlexFili
A few weeks ago, someone gave me the advice to watch a film called District 9. I hadn't even heard of it until I read some material over the internet. I watched the trailer while I went to see Inglorious. I was really impressed with the visual detail and the metaphors so I went to see it.

Wow, District 9 is really quite a film apart from anything else. I particularly enjoyed the human/alien interaction and the first half of the film.

I compare it a bit to Clockwork Orange with it's violence and Planet of the Apes for its use of segregation and oppression. I can't wait to buy it when it comes out on dvd.

What did you think of it? Good film? Bad film?

Great film. My only qualm was the soundtrack was a bit on the typical side - the wailing ethnic chorus was quite old-hat. But it worked for the atmosphere, probably better than most movies.

But yeah, there's all kinds of messages both subtle and overt about tolerance and human nature.

The Life of Brian reference was quite random, but not a far stretch from the name "Wikus".

To be honest, I didn't pay much attention to the music at all. The only piece of music I noticed was the one at the end, and since it's an instrumental... I'll be cursed not to know what it is.

I didn't like the final section of the film as much as the first bit, but the ending itself was reasonably optimistic. I loved the CG prawns
