Observation #2

Is it me or is the American media incredibly ignorant of Wales? I have seen a lot of American shows in my time, (I mean, there's more of them than British ones) but very few of them have Welsh characters or even references. Scottish characters are common, as are jokes at the expense of us (the English), and the Irish are frequently featured. But Wales, hardly ever. It's not like Wales has no identity. I know Gavin and Stacey did quite well in America, but that show's shit, and it was still made in Britain. Are there any good American shows with prominent Welsh elements? (Also, what's the deal with foriegn countries calling us British? I know we're British as well, but they call the Irish Irish, they call the Scottish Scottish, but the English? British.)

WELSHYYY!

EDIT: After careful reflection, I have reached the conclusion that foriegn medias don't care about Wales because it's really quite dull.

Welsh characters don't appear on American TV because most Americans haven't heard of The Welsh. This results in a) writers not knowing that they're a legitimate source of characters and b) the few writers who have heard of them won't put Welsh characters in because it would just confuse the audience.

The only tv show I can think of that has introduced the world to Welsh characters is Torchwood. And very few Americans watch Torchwood.

Why is it that we Americans never include characters from Chad in our t.v. shows? Don't we know that Chad is a place full of people with hopes, dreams, and aspirations just as identifiable as our own? Don't we realize how arrogant it is of us to exclude the good people of Chad from taking part in our fictions?

In retrospect, shut the fuck up, you obnoxious British cunt. Do you people ever get tired of talking about how ignorant or arrogant we must be if we didn't include your little subset into our culture? Think about this: How arrogant do you have to be to think that we should give a fuck about you and your way of life. I have never met a Welshman. If I had, I might be inclined to include Welsh characters in whatever piece of fiction I was writing. Or maybe I wouldn't. What fucking difference does it make?

Run along, you snotty little bitch.

And we call you British because that's what you fucking are.

Why are you using Anonyman's avatar?

Considering how American entertainment butchers the cultrual identity of almost every well-known nation, you should be happy Wales has gone under the radar. The most I've seen of any Welsh characters was in the book A Swiftly Tilting Planet.

Jesus Christ. Enough of the "I'm one of the o.k, thumbs up Americans because I don't like us either" routine. British television is just as godawful shit as ours or anyone else's. The entertainment industry in general is guilty of over-homogenizing everything and making it easily identifiable, and hopefully easily mocked. I've watched British television. It sucks. Just like ours. And Australia's. And everybody fucking else.

Did I ever give any notion that I think American media is the only shitty media in the world? He was talking exclusively about American media so that's the way I put it. If I remember correctly, you've pointed out on numerous occassions your disdain of American culture and have proclaimed you're not a proud American. So, don't accuse me of being a falsely unjingoistic citizen becuase I don't garnish everything I say with dickery and vague perspectives. I've lived in the US almost my whole life. It's my privelidge to critique my culture the way I see fit. It would be completely presumptuous to judge other cultures on the grounds of "I've seen a small fraction of their programming." Christ, you've seen enough of my posts to know I'm not totally anti-American and, in reality, quite moderate towards many aspects and controversies surrounding America.

Of course I'm not proud to be American. As I've mentioned, I had nothing to do with it. And I have never expressed a disdain for American culture more than any other.

My problem here is that when you respond to statements of obvious bigotry and stupidity with statements as bizarre as yours about the slaughtering of cultural identities at our hands (which by the way, is a pretty fucking vague perspective), you are validating this moron's ideas. You are standing up and saying "Yes, sir. We left you out. But we are so much more incompetent than you fine people, that we would have royally fucked it up anyway. But I'm okay. Because I recognize how bad we are". This may not be what you meant. But it is how it reads.

The only reason I didn't take a strong opposition to this person's post was because I really didn't care that much to begin with. The only reason I went on the "America sucks" streak (as you seem to see it) is because the first thought that came to mind is how whenever I see another culture being portrayed in the media, and especially entertainment programming, it's normally negative. I'm not saying I'm fundementally against it (well, I am, sort of), I was just saying to be careful what you wish for because if that person cares so much about American coverage of the Whelsh people, then he probably will get a pretty huge disappointment when that coverage will most likely turn out to be negative.

You're right. My wording (expecially over the internet) can be very vague and generally misleading. Forgive me if it's a pain to get through.

Have you seen how we are portrayed in the British media (entertainment or otherwise)? They think that we have a grand total of two accents throughout the entire country. They latch unto every unpleasant story, and actually think that it is an accurate representation of America. Trust me, I know what you are saying, but the bottom line is that it happens everywhere. I dislike universal problems being couched as American problems.

Of course, and so do I, but I feel like the only problems I have a right to complain about are those that pertain to me and my country (I'm sure I've contadicted that statement a bunch of times here). So what if the British media spews ridiculous generilizations about America that actually pertain to the whole human race? Fuck them. The only people, regardless of nationality, that I will ever want to associate with or whose thoughts I will ever want to give a shit about are those that are smart enough and open-minded enough to see past that bullshit. In other words, those who mind won't matter and those who matter won't mind.
