Yesterday, I encountered a severe case of music elitism. It all started out when I was talking to a few mates about music over Xbox live.

As we were in the midst of our discussion, one of my friend's "Xbox friend" joins the party and as I mention that I like rap and yet enjoy groups like Radiohead and Oasis but dislike shi-I mean bands like Pink Floyd and Muse.
Well this bastard sounded like he had sprayed milk from his nose as he said "What the fuck? How the fuck can you like that shitty rap and yet like shitty Radiohead? But dislike Muse and Pink Floyd? They are millions better than any of those pissy bands"

This went on and on until I let rip with several imaginative swearwords involving his mum and a dog and muted him.

Can anyone understand how the hell people can get so uptight about music?

Because art is a reflection of life and vice versa. And music is the most approachable and invasive form of art. It's always there.

Today's art teaches us that being misogynistic, imbecilic, hypocrites is the way men are supposed to act. Women are to act as vapid tarts, or in your face, "extreme" bitches. It's all horribly degrading, and musically mediocre at best. And I'm not just talking about rap. This includes all popular forms of music.

It's about social identity and culture.

Few young Mexicans here, for example, would admit they like Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin or.... erm, Rick Astley or anybody like that, suggestively so that they do not identify as white.

So the issue here is really not whether they really 'like' this music, it's just unacceptable in their social circles if they are to continue living in their stereotypes. And this goes for anybody, not just certain young Mexicans I use in my exmaple.

EDIT I see OANST already covered conditioned stereotypes.

I'm actually a bit happy that I was around people who were a bit uptight about music. Otherwise I doubt my mind would have even considered getting such a wide music taste that I have.
Now I like to listen to music with actual quality rather than the shit most people make nowadays
But On the other hand, I'm really laid back with it mostly.. I can still turn on the radio for some easy listening...
I still wish I had a better understanding of music, as that would make me appreciate it more.
