Just so you know, I'm guessing this is going on during the Portal Storms betwen HL1 and HL2

I've seen What's in the Box, do you think I'm under a rock or something? Just didn't think to post it here. I was actually planning on posting it on my media blog, didn't get around to it yet.

Anyway, that awesome piece of action is made in my lovely country, in Nijmegen to be exact. The entire thing is kind of mysterious.

The amount of editing done in this two man project is nothing short of awesome. The entire film only took about 150 euros to make and has drawn the attention of 20th Century Fox, among other, who want to know how they made the film.

Probably 150 euros + an equivalent number of manhours that a movie studio would have had to pay hundreds of thousands for.

Movie studio's generally have much more advanced equipment then just a powerful Mac and powerful editing software. What these guys do on a single computer in say 20 hours of work, a Hollywood editor can do in less then 3. Then again their hardware is often hideously expensive.

Also most Hollywood movies don't have huge crews of editors. 2 or 3 people and the director usually are involved with editing the final movie so hundreds of thousands in man hours might be exaggerating.

Hey, Havoc.

You know that scene in The Dark Knight where a dump truck is hit by the tumbler?

It took four months to build that scene.
You know nothing.

Havoc: I meant in the CG, not the editing. Besides, that film doesn't exactly have all that many edit points.

You also have to consider that when films are blown up to the big screen, more work has to be done on everything because small faults really stand out.

I read that when the movie Serenity was made, they had to spend some absurd amount of money developing the CG model of the ship from scratch, because the one they had from the TV show did not have enough detail.

Hey Kastere.

You know that you're talking to someone who is studying at a school for stuff like this? I'm pretty sure I know more about this then you do, thank you very much.

Editing a movie and creating CG for a movie (read: creating complete 3D models with extremely high levels of detail) are two very different things. However if you look closely you'll see in this film that not much CG is used, just a lot of very very nice editing work using cut's and paste's of existing models from HL2 and other sources. The various HUD elements could be classed as CG but can be done quite easily in any video editor that I'd class it under editing as well.

I don't think we can really compare a student film to a Hollywood production though... This film was meant (like so many student films) to show what is possible with a low budget and low tech hardware.

You should all stop arguing about this pointless work/technology thing.

Instead, compliment me on how awesome I am for finding this video and posting it BEFORE HAVOC
