Ahh...My time playing video games

Games have definitely messed up our heads.

The first game I ever played was a demo of Wipeout 2097 (the night city level with the Red Bull adverts and a blimp) to the lyrics-less tune of Fire Starter. It was on a PlayStation the boyfirend of an aunt had aquired through a friend who worked for Sony. My family had all gone to their place to play on the machine, it being a different world back then.

I had no idea what a "play station" was, and had pictured a giant toy car park/factory/whatever, and wondered why we were all going to play with it. I was astonished by what I saw. "It's like a TV program where you control the images! Wow!" The link between consoles and arcade machines/computer games never occurred to me. Television was always something you enjoyed passively, and a subversion of this understanding was mind blowing. I must have been six or seven, or even only five at the time.

First game I can remember playing was that Sonic collection game for the Sega Saturn.

Anyway, my first game was possibly either Command and Conquer or Sonic the Hedgehog.

First game I can remember playing - or at least remember sitting on the floor watching as my brother played it and going ooooh - was Space Quest. The original version. On a mono green monitor.

Oh wow. My cousins, all a few years older than me (and possibly in marginally better off households), had games consoles I would inevitably play (or rather watch them play: you know how it goes) when I was very young. I can’t remember what the first game I saw or played was any more than I can remember the first television programme I saw. It was possibly something like Marble Madness or perhaps even Tetris. Or maybe something on the C64. Wow. Mindfuck just trying to think that far back.

Either Megaman X (Fucking love those games, or at least the first 3) or Super Mario World.

This was well before I'd heard of Lucasarts. I was a convert to their cause and never went back to my old, heathen ways.

My first game... that takes me back. I'm not sure what the first one was. My mother had been a gamer back then and owned a nintendo at the time. As I was growing up(I'm told) I would see my parents playing the Nintendo and would cry until they gave me a controller. Eventually I was able to realize they were handing me a controller that wasn't plugged and I would cry until it was.
Between the ages of 1 and 3 I played Super Mario Bros. a lot. At 1 I didn't quite understand how to avoid goombas and was very afraid of them, but by the time I reached 3 I could always make it to World 8-2, but never get pass there.

So yeah. Super Mario Bros. When it was about 4 years old and I was 1.
