Too late to apologize?

Posted 02-24-2009 at 09:00 AM by alf's brother's mate
Today I decided to stop being annoying, stop posting spam, stop being irritating, and stop annoying other forum members.

Ahhh.
I feel much better now.
Sorry if I have ever annoyed you.

I don't find you to be annoying. We've dealt with far, far worse. We've dealt with me.

That's okay.

I've come to the determination that an online persona nearly never represents the real person.

No, your wig.

I've always found an online persona always represents the real person in a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde sense, you can be a fantastic father, a good husband and an excellent friend but if you get your kicks out of going online and cackling maliciously at those you view to be below you then your real face is the persona.

This is metareality, we are removed from the constraints of laws, of rules and of consequences so we can be what we've always secretly wanted to be. Has anyone ever read Maskerade by Terry Prattchet?

:
'...Like the lie about masks.'
'What lie about masks?'
'The way people say they hide faces.'
'The do hide faces,' said Nanny Ogg.
'Only the one on the outside.'

You may be right, but maybe this 'metareality' persona is a backfire from the constraints of 'social expectation'... the real person lying somewhere in the middle encompassing both?

I think it would be unrealistic to say that people are always themselves online because this would not be the case.

My wig, eh?

I know this is just the internet but you don't have to hurt my feelings. I'm very sensitive about my hair.

I'm so upset.

Depends what you define as 'Themselves', people create fantasies they can be free in to make life more bearable, Cyberia is one big fantasy.

But in the words of V if you believe enough that something is real then you can find something true about yourself inside.

My point exactly. When the self or 'the true individual' is inhibited, which is commonly the case in modern society, we get that 'pendulum' effect when there is another, alternate, outlet for what isn't felt can be expressed socially.

I speak personally abut this matter because I think that to some degree others will relate, but I spend all day either by myself in the repair shop or having to deal with customers on a professional basis which I find very restricting. Then I meet online friends and go off the handle! Is that me? No, but I'm a jokester at heart.

.... but the 'pendulum' effect is evident. Going online is not the only way people find their outlets.

Ironically, people who are normally themselves in modern society tend to be deemed 'eccentric' because they tend not to care about what others think.

This must be what attending philosophy lectures while high on 'shrooms is like.

And this is where the trip turns bad.

All Philosophy is akin to being high on mushrooms, we even have it worse than scientists as we cannot place faith in inductive evidence.

Solid Philosophy is pretty much a contradiction in terms.

That post was more aimed at before you came to the forums Shaman, (more May/June 2008) but thanks for the comment anyway.

I skimmed through most of this disscusion and it surprises me how fast you can go from Almond Joy to multicoloured swans.

The swan thing is a Philosophical joke, according to Scientific reasoning all swans were white, and then they found a black one.

The existence of black swans presupposes the existence of multicoloured swans, no matter how improbable it is.

That's almost exactly the same as my green swan routine, which I use to explain the principle of Popperian falsifiability, usually in a discussion about religion where I then proceed to crap on someone else's beliefs.

Except in my routine, I take the stance that green swans do not exist, because that is the only statement concerning their existance that is falsifiable and therefore scientific. Assuming that they do exist is not scientific, because no amount of not finding green swans disproves their existance, rendering it an untestable hypothesis.

Wings of Fire's Avatar
My point is that the statement 'Multicoloured swans exist' is unscientific, but if you give me a swan farm, a genetics facility and a few hundred years I'm sure I can prove it wrong.

All proactive diciplines are broken, repeatedly, by themselves.
