Beliefs aren't worth fighting for.

Posted 02-08-2009 at 02:05 PM by Nemo
I've never fully understood matyrdom.

While I understand it when it is used to bring about a change in a wrong or unjustice system, I don't get why people become matyrs to resist a change.

Your beliefs are something that no one can change. Not you, nor Hobo, nor God could change my beliefs. No one can threaten to stab my thoughts with a knife, or mug them.

My body, however, can be broken easily. Much more easily than something that doesn't physically exist. And I would rather bare the pain of lying than bare the pain of being beaten and bruised.

My beliefs aren't worth fighting for. Even if I wanted to change the way things are, I couldn't.

Your thoughts can’t be stabbed or changed in any physical way: of course not, thoughts aren’t physical things. However, your beliefs can be changed in many ways. They’ve probably changed over time in ways you don’t even realize. Your values and priorities are shaped by your experiences; your understanding of motives and consequences will be broadened by argument and experience.

I don’t understand martyrdom, either. It proves nothing but that one individual took their beliefs that seriously. To mould your belief about that fact is basically accepting an ad hominem argument. I would see it more of a sign that whatever problem there is needs to be addressed before more people take their lives in this way. On the other hand, martyrdom may have observable effects on the willingness and determination of others to continue fighting for that cause.

But beliefs are changeable. The very existence of both science and religion are gargantuan monuments to that fact. It’s a huge relief; if beliefs were intractable, no amount of reason could ever hope to make people better, whatever you believe ‘better’ is. Most people would, I imagine and hope, incorporate in ‘better’ something about encouraging humanity to continue existing, and the human experience to become, well, better.

It is my belief that this should definitely be a thread.

You see, this is why we can't have nice threads.

I don't think I could kill myself in order to cause change. I would never know if I created the impact I was going for or not.
