This question is about mod's alternative to closing or moving to Necrum a dead thread: how do you choose?

when a thread is moved to Necrum, all the posts you made in that thread will no longer be counted in your post count, so your post count will decrease. i spose its for really spammy/trolly threads to show the members that participated that 'they haven't gained anything.' whereas if its just locked, the post count remains the same.

then again i really cant understand the desire for a high post count. i really cant.

I agree ... I even missed my my 2000 milestone.. I was a hundred or so posts above and I was like "Oh.." ... Yea.. Post count never meant anything to me, and I don't see the big appeal. it just means you're a spammer, or have been here for a very long time.

People seem to be so worked up over negrep. So it works, right?
I don't think anyone is abusing it... If someone negreps you just because you have a different opinion, I think you should notify the mods, and maybe they can do something about it.
I think there should be rules to protect people from irresponsible negrep. Mods can see everyone's negrep history and comments, so this shouldn't be a problem.

well i would assume its easier for the mods to dole out -rep than giving warnings/infractions out, and its actually less harsh. thing is people are getting obsessed over the reputation system and seem to prefer a warning/infraction than a massive -rep.

and usually you would have to make a decent or meaningful contribution to a thread in order to receive massive +rep, as its usually given by mods/admins. most of the time you only get a few little reps for posting something spammy or offensive, if not -repped anyway.

and for the record: i never -rep members for differences in opinion. different characteristics and opinions are what make people interesting. most of the time its for being offensive.

OT: i was shocked to see my post count drop below 1000 when the Mod Survivor Island 2 thread was Necrummed. it took me a while to work out why it had happened.

To do so is to assume that all the members here are smart, responsible, and productive and we all know that's not the case. I've been negrepped at least three times because of something petty like conflicting opinions. Giving subjectiveness any form of destructive power is a dumb move. This is partly why I have a love/hate relationship with free speech.
I don't think permanent demerits should be allowed to be distributed over temporary unpleasantness. In my opinion, discrediting the value of someone's input by blemishing their account with negrep over fleeting matters (and they almost always are fleeting) is wrong.

It's the moderators' job to decide who deserves what. I'm swearing off negrep on my part. If there's any friction between me and someone else, I'd rather face it head on and deal with it maturely than do the equivalent of taking a big dump on their account and running away.

i was -repped 4 times in a row recently, losing 34 points. i'm not going to say i didn't give a shit, because i did, but i have for the most part behaved myself since then by staying on topic and such. its like getting a cuff around the head for being stupid instead of receiving the belt. i don't resent anyone for doing it.

and you say facing it head on is more mature than repping? that's true but you can't really do that without getting done for flaming or spamming a thread up, and you cant make a thread just for that, or a blog because that pisses people off, so people are gonna either choose PM'ing or -repping. i'd rather -rep, to be honest, and leave a comment explaining my actions for doing so.

what would be the point of having a rep system where -reps can only be given out under a mod's say so? most of the time the -rep will be found 'valid' by opinion, meaning the mods also. the mods would just be deciding which -reps they want to go through and which ones not, using their opinion.

and if it is decided that only mods can -rep, there will be a hell of a lot more members crying over claims of 'unfair -reps'. also, i would guess flaming would rise due to not being able to 'say what they have to say' in a -rep. and if they don't openly flame, PM's would be sent to others arguing over why they were being a dick, and would still leave the involved members irritated with each other if it wasn't settled, maybe displaying it in their posts. wouldn't really matter to me anyway because most of the -rep i receive is from staff.

well a newbie has PM'd me a couple of times and i explained to him what he's doing to irritate people. he's a nice chap as he seems totally different in his PM's. i told him to just be himself, not to try and impress us as he's clearly trying too hard, and he'll be fine. you cant judge a book by its cover, but its hard not to when you cant open the bloody thing.

also i have a very good friend on here who sticks to FC and only has a 100 or so points, and i often ask him for advice and respect his views and opinions. i don't take heed of the rep power. usually, the bigger that gets, the bigger their head gets.
