History of Oddworld Inhabitants

There's an awesome article about the history of Oddworld Inhabitants over on the website of NewTimes, a San Luis Obispo-based magazine.

http://www.newtimesslo.com/cover/705...d-inhabitants/

Nothing is especially new to someone who's been paying attention and piecing stuff together for many years, but it's still a great read with interesting insights and titbits.

The rumoured name for the next Oddysee in the Quintology. Nod's Oddysee is another one.

If i'm wrong, Wil can correct me.

Exactly, except that it's not a rumour, it's been flatly stated by Lorne in half his interviews since 1997. He names Squeek (yes, double 'e') in the official Abe's Oddysee walkthrough - back when walkthroughs were books, of course.

And also Nod has been disproven as the name of the fourth Quintology hero.

You bad fan.

No pictures of Squeek were ever produced/released to the best of my knowledge. I don't even think that one made the drawing board before they went under.

Unless you count the little drawing Max made in the margin of my notebook based on Lorne's description I count that.

That was an interesting read - OWI's had a long rough ride, but I still find it a shame that they didn't do things differently (like Valve did, for example). I'm glad alternative games like theirs are more in favour now.

I like to think what would OWI be like if they didn't have that rough ride? I can imagen all the games we know and were cancled were classic games.

*sigh*

It's unlikely that I'm ever going to return to SLO, but it's still sad that they're going to be taking down the ODDWORLD INHABITANTS signage from the doors. I wonder why they kept it up there for so long.

I was never aware of the how the game was received at E3.

Well, I was aware that it got a good reception but just didn't know that the game didn't gather much of an audience at first so I learned something

Though the building has remained empty in the years since the company closed, the owner said he plans to re-list the space for new tenants
There's your answer, nobody else has moved in there yet.

Not quite – if it’s being relisted it sounds like the owner hasn’t rented the space out since OWI left.

A very interesting article, if a little saddening. The part about having to close their doors and let the whole team go really hammers home just what the gaming industry lost. I hope Oddworld’s future brings back some of that heritage.

Squeek is a slug-like creature, similar to a Slurg. Very small. The game would have essentially been Oddworld from a bug's point of view.

I always assumed that was a fan theory, rather than an official description. The only thing I know for sure about Squeek is that it's meant to explore the topic of symbiosis.

Pretty much what Oddhunter said; I had previously assumed that OWI owned their offices and that they kept them for some reason (possibly in the hope that they'd be able to set up shop again some time in the future?), but that article makes it clear that they were rented and implies that they haven't been occupied in the last seven years. And I wonder why. Perhaps OWI signed a ten year lease in 2002?

They haven't abandoned Oddworld - Stewart Gilray stays in touch with them - but they are focusing on Xmobb right now. They'll be paying Oddworld more attention once JAW starts working on more projects from the ground up.

Xmobb is still finding itself, but I think it has the potential to be a very unique networking tool if they continue to work the kinks out. I remember saying to Max that it would be much more accessible as a browser-based application as opposed to a program you had to actually install. Sure enough, a few months later it became browser-based as well. So good on them.

I'm a little sceptical about Xmobb to be honest - Especially since both Sony and Google have something similar already. But you never know, it might catch on.
